Google Interns At Apple's Genius Bar

Google Interns At Apple's Genius Bar

Gavin Ovsak, a Software Engineering Intern on the Hangouts API Team at Google, posted his album of his experience working at Google as an intern. One picture was of all the interns taking a picture at Apple's Genius Bar, with their Noogler hats on.

Seems like an awkward picture, being Apple and Google don't currently have the best vibe going on between them.

But it is fun to see 11 Google interns standing next to one Apple genius in an Apple store.

He posted the picture on Google+.

This post is part of our daily Search Photo of the Day column, where we find fun and interesting photos related to the search industry and share them with our readers.

Celebs Take Aim at Anthony Weiner on Twitter

Thoroughly enjoying the hilarious joke opportunities, Patton Oswalt tweeted, "Right now Samuel L. Jackson is in Anthony Weiner's apartment, telling 'Carlos Danger' about the Avengers Initiative." and "Hello. My name is Carlos Danger. You sexted my father. Prepare to be blocked."

Delighting in the alias, Michael Ian Black posted, "I only got up to Level 2 on my Spanish Rosetta Stone, so I never learned about Carlos Danger. :(" while Denis Leary tweeted, "Carlos Danger is also the lead character's name in the Mexican reboot of Rescue Me."

Soon, a Name Generator was created and became very popular, with Chrissy Teigen sharing, "hahaha @johnlegend your sexting pseudonym is Gustavo Furtive, according to @Slate's Carlos Danger Name Generator" and Richard Roeper writing, "My sexting pseudonym is Armando Catastrophe, according to @Slate's Carlos Danger Name Generator."

Check out what other famous faces are saying about Anthony Weiner below.

Albert Brooks: Royal baby has a name: George Arthur Carlos Danger.

Rupert Murdoch: NY mayoral hopeful Weiner almost tragic if not so funny. What a sicko. Should help city by just fading away.

Olivia Wilde: Where there's a Weiner there's usually sexting.

Mario Lopez: It's 730am and Carlos Danger has already made my day... :)

Michael McKean: "The greatest trick Carlos Danger ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."

Mark Duplass: If you unscramble the letters in "Carlos Danger" you get "Smallish Dick." Not really, but that would be pretty awesome.

Bitter NYT Reporter John Schwartz Mocks NB?s Sheppard About Son?s Wedding

In a bizarre tweet, John Schwartz, a national reporter for the New York Times decided to attack NewsBusters associate editor Noel Sheppard for celebrating his son?s upcoming wedding.

After Sheppard had noted how he was going to be ?crying more than bride?s father...but for different reasons,? an apparently bitter Schwartz shot back with an insult: ?Because you?ve been renting him out to workhouses all these years and you?re sorry to be losing the income??

What possessed Schwartz to engage in such a petty and pathetic attempt at humor is difficult to say. Below is the full context of the tweet preserved via image in case Schwartz decides to delete it:

john-schwartz-workhouse.PNG

One possible explanation is that Schwartz holds a grudge against NewsBusters for a post we ran in December of 2012 from Tim Graham which pointed out how the New York Times had used its 2012 annual list of notable books to promote its own reporters? work.

On the list of the self-promoted books last year was a tome written by none other than John Schwartz. Although Graham did not criticize any of the Times authors? books, the subject matter of Schwartz?s manuscript might explain why he would make such a cruel attempt at humor tonight. The book is called Oddly Normal: One Family?s Struggle to Help Their Teenage Son Come to Terms With His Sexuality.

This is the first and only time anyone at NB has ever mentioned Schwartz or his son. We've only mentioned Schwartz himself two other times, once for a profile he wrote of leftist activist Bill Nye and another merely in passing.

Whatever his motivations were for making it, John Schwartz?s tasteless joke is a disgrace. There?s no doubt at all that the guy is a left-wing jerk.

Update 8:03. Schwartz has replied to this post in the comments below. Here is his statement in full:

This is John -- I've deleted the tweet, which was intended as a silly joke and instead came off as insulting. It wasn't my intention, but I apologize for it; if Noel would like to send me an email, I will apologize directly to him. Meanwhile, congratulations on the wedding.

Apple pushed to investigate source of tin used in iPhones

DNP Apple investigating source of tin used in iPhones

Apple is investigating claims that tin used in its products comes from mines on Bangka Island in Indonesia. This comes after environmental watchdog Friends of the Earth (FoE) pressured the tech giant to identify the source of the metal used for soldering components in iDevices. While the island region is one of the largest suppliers of tin in the world, mining conditions are far from ideal. Landslides consistently claim the lives of workers, and mining itself has had an adverse effect on the local environment. The group successfully pressured Samsung to admit its involvement with the area's tin supplies in April.

For its part, Apple commissioned a fact-finding visit to learn more and is helping to fund a new study on mining in the region so they "can better understand the situation." Or maybe they could save some time and money by reading the one conducted by The Guardian and FoE from last November. You know, the one that found that unregulated tin mining leans heavily on child labor, destroys the environment and causes on average 100 - 150 miner fatalities every year. Cupertino has already vowed to not use conflict minerals and appointed a former EPA administrator to focus on its environmental efforts, so it at least looks ?responsible. Now to see if it can back up its actions.

Snapguide Now Lets Users Request How-To Guides From Each Other, Another Step To Build Out Its Platform Of Microapps

2. Requests Featured ScreenSnapguide -- the how-to app now that capitalizes on the ubiquity of smartphones and tablets in our lives to encourage us to create guides for everything from cooking to crafting and eyelash curling -- is today releasing an update that it hopes will spur users to become more interactive with the service, even if they themselves lack the motivation to create guides themselves. A new iOS update (for iPhone and iPad) will let users start making requests for new guides, along with new interface updates that will help them better navigate the content that is already there.

Monson: With Howard?s exit, Lakers join NBA?s unwashed masses

Dwight Howard left the Lakers for the Houston Rockets, reportedly because he disliked coach Mike D'Antoni's system, and because he didn't want to play in Kobe Bryant's shadow. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill, File)

NBA ? Superstar center couldn?t co-exist with D?Antoni?s system, Kobe?s shadow

Not only is nobody around here shedding tears over the sad episode of "As the Spalding Turns" featuring the Lakers ? cue the heavy organ music ? but everybody?s getting a good laugh, too. This is lowbrow NBA entertainment, flowing out of the league?s marquee franchise, a club that has had its way over the past 30 years more than any other.

The whole thing?s collapsed into that empty melodrama. And there?s not a championship in sight for a town that has become more tinsel than title. The Fates have conspired so disruptively there, the Clippers have replaced the Lakers as the only L.A. team to be taken seriously.

We join the story today in the aftermath of Dwight Howard jilting the team and the town, having bolted for a better place, a better mistress. What?s this ? Houston? Who?s this ? the Rockets?

You just don?t do that to the Lakers. You do that to Orlando, to Cleveland, to Memphis. Not to L.A. The late Jim Murray, longtime columnist for the Los Angeles Times, was a good guy and a great writer. But he used to speak of smaller markets as somehow being undeserving of stars. A true star needed a big stage on which to perform. He needed the bright lights of New York or Los Angeles. Anything less was ? well, less.

The Lakers, and all of Southern California, came to reflect that same belief. Nobody turns his back on L.A. They wanted Howard, as was demonstrated by the billboards put up by the Lakers all around the Southland, asking ? begging - D12 to stay. That, in and of itself, was evidence of change blowing in the smoggy wind. That, and the fact that the Lakers now must make do with Chris Kaman.

The Lakers, so used to plucking great players from other teams, now have been plucked themselves.

Sometimes the rules of attraction make no sense. But, in this case, they do. Look, Howard is kind of a baby who has been disingenuous and, even worse, gotten good coaches fired. He wants attention the way a lot of insecure people want it ? on his terms. Look here and love me. Despite early promise that he would become a force in the NBA, he?s become more of a sideshow. Most of that is his fault. But his move to Houston isn?t a complete admission that he is weak.

Reports have surfaced that Howard might have re-signed with the Lakers had they committed to getting rid of Kobe Bryant after Bryant?s contract runs out next season. Amnestying him immediately, given his Achilles injury, would have been more preferable.

If true, that indicates one of two things or perhaps both: Howard didn?t want to play in the shadow of Bryant, or he thought with some $30 million committed to Kobe, now compromised by age and injury, the Lakers had no shot at real contention.

Talking for the first time on Wednesday since Howard made his decision, Bryant said: "I think everybody is cut differently. [Howard] has his way of leading that he feels like would be most effective and would work for him, and obviously the way we?ve gone about it with this organization and the leaders that we?ve had ? myself, Magic and Kareem ? we?ve done it a different way."

story continues below

Bryant added: "I haven?t followed enough to hear what he?s kind of said about going to Houston and some of the reasons why he went to Houston. I don?t know. I don?t. You look at me, you really think once a guy decides to go someplace else, I?m going to waste my time trying to figure out why that happened?"

On the other hand, there have been whispers that one of the reasons is Howard?s dislike for Kobe. It?s been said that Bryant?s meeting with Howard in the run-up to his decision, which was supposed to be a recruiting effort, actually backfired, Dwight wholly turned off by Kobe?s I?ll-teach-you-how-to-win pitch.

Shaquille O?Neal ripped Howard, saying he couldn?t handle the heat in L.A. Steve Nash told ESPN radio that "Dwight wasn?t comfortable here and didn?t want to be here." He also said: "I?ve heard he said to the media that he never quite felt embraced in L.A., he never quite felt maybe supported. Really just never quite felt comfortable at home, and I don?t know that that?s anybody?s fault."

From a basketball standpoint, Howard?s nod toward Houston makes sense. In L.A., he was part of a Mike D?Antoni system that wasn?t suited for his talents. Howard had to deal with the gravitational and egotistical pull of Kobe. In Houston, his game will be easily highlighted, playing alongside James Harden.

Not saying Howard is blameless for the debris still smoldering around the Lakers. It?s just that Los Angeles isn?t for everyone. And Howard?s decision to dump the Lakers for the Rockets and to leave L.A. for Houston shouldn?t stand by itself as some sort of defect or shortcoming.

Chris Kaman will handle L.A. just fine.

Smithfield CEO feels Senate heat over sale to China

By Doug Palmer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. senators sought answers from the head of Smithfield Foods on Wednesday about whether the proposed sale of the Virginia ham maker to China's largest pork producer could hurt U.S. food safety and raise prices for American consumers.

Although there was no indication Congress would intervene to block the deal, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow said she was worried that it would undermine the long-term competitiveness of the U.S. pork industry by exporting valuable production techniques to China.

"This is a precedent-setting case and we owe it to consumers, producers and workers to ensure we are asking the right questions and evaluating the long-term implications," the Democrat said at the hearing with Smithfield President and CEO Larry Pope.

Since more Chinese purchases of U.S. food companies appear to be likely, "at what point are we willing to say it's not in America's interest to have our food processing industry owned by another country," Stabenow told reporters after the hearing.

The sale of Smithfield Foods, the world's largest pork producer with more than 46,000 employees in 25 states and four countries, to Shuanghui International Holdings for $4.7 billion would be the biggest Chinese takeover of a U.S. company to date.

'SAME OLD SMITHFIELD'

The Smithfield, Virginia-based company makes ham, sausage, bacon and other prepared meats under labels including Eckrich, Gwaltney and Armour. It has argued the deal is good for United States because it will boost pork exports, and good for China because it will help meet the country's growing demand for pork as hundreds of millions of Chinese move into the middle class.

But some have questioned what kind of production practices Shuanghui could bring to the United States, especially after revolting images this year of thousands of rotting pig carcasses floating down the Huangpu River that runs through Shanghai raised concerns about food safety practices in China.

Pope sought to assure the panel the company would be the "same old Smithfield" after the deal.

"Nothing's going to change. This is going to be an American company. We will continue to operate like an American company ... Regardless of where the ownership is, this company is going to have to operate under the laws of the United States. We're not operating under the laws of China," Pope said.

Republican Senator Mike Johanns said he was skeptical that the deal would lead to China becoming a major pork producer because water shortages in that country make it difficult to grow enough grain.

But Johanns said the sale was galling to many members of Congress because if a U.S. company tried to buy a Chinese pork producer, the deal would be blocked.

"You know for a fact you could not do in China what they are doing here with Smithfield. Chinese regulators would laugh at you if you said, 'Well, I'll just buy Shuanghui,'" Johanns said.

'A SIGNIFICANT SHAREHOLDER'

Under questioning from Democrat Sherrod Brown, Pope acknowledged he would benefit significantly from the proposed sale, but declined to say how much he would gain.

"I don't have those numbers right here in right in front of me ... I certainly am a significant shareholder. I'm going to receive the $34 per share that every other shareholder is going to receive," plus additional compensation intended to keep the current management team in place for three years, he said.

A recent securities filing showed Pope could receive nearly $46.6 million in merger-related payments as part of the planned takeover.

Other lawmakers expressed concern that China's huge demand for pork could drive up prices in the United States. Pope said he did not expect that to happen.

Congress has no direct role in approving or blocking the transaction, but the hearing sheds light on issues facing the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, an inter-agency government panel that examines whether a foreign purchase of a U.S. company poses any national security risk.

Lawmakers also worried about the impact on the competitiveness of U.S. pork production if Shuanghui gains access to Smithfield's valuable technology and hog genetics.

Stabenow noted that Shuanghui is offering to pay a 30 percent premium for Smithfield even though the American company has been struggling to make a profit.

"That, to me, raises questions about the economic motivations of the purchase. Is Shuanghui focused on acquiring Smithfield's technology, which was developed with considerable assistance by U.S. taxpayers?" Stabenow asked.

Pope said he expected the deal to "drive growth and expansion not only for our growers but for the entire U.S. pork industry." He said China's huge protein deficit made it unlikely it would become a significant pork exporter.

"China is responsible for 50 percent of the world's pork consumption and their demand is still growing, whereas pork demand in the U.S. has been declining for almost 15 years," Pope told the agriculture panel.

Voorbeschouwing Mexico tegen Canada

Mexico - Canada (vrijdag 12 juli 5:00 uur)

Late to the Chinese market, Ford aims to catch up

Dave Schoch has one of the toughest jobs at Ford Motor Co.: Catching the competition in the world's biggest car market.

When Schoch arrived in China 13 years ago, the government was building eight-lane freeways in major cities, but bicyclists and pedestrians still filled the streets. The Chinese were buying fewer than 2 million cars and trucks each year, a fraction of the 14.4 million sold in 2000 in the U.S.

When he returned to China last year, Schoch was stunned. The freeways were choked with cars, from inexpensive, Chinese-made Wuling minivans to Mercedes-Benz sedans. The red-hot Chinese economy had more than doubled annual wages, giving millions of people the money to buy a first vehicle or move up to a luxury brand.

"Things turned upside-down," says Schoch, who was named head of Ford's Asia Pacific operations in the fall. "You have to be here and experience it to believe what has happened in the last decade."

Last year, Chinese consumers bought 19 million cars and trucks - 5 million more than consumers in the U.S. Ford's share of those sales was just 3 percent. Years of corporate chaos and financial trouble slowed Ford's entry into China as its rivals gained a foothold. Together, General Motors and Volkswagen control a third of China's market.

But the race is far from over. China is still a country where just 58 out of every 1,000 people own cars. In the U.S., that number is closer to 800.

Every year, tens of millions of Chinese are reaching the income threshold they need to buy a car, Schoch says. Many analysts predict annual sales in China of 30 million by 2020, almost double the U.S. forecast of 17 million. It's up to Schoch to ensure Ford gets a big chunk of that phenomenal growth.

"I go home each night thinking, 'Have I really tried to move the needle? Are we moving the organization fast enough to take advantage of this? Because I really think we have a golden opportunity here," he says.

Ford wants to double its Chinese market share to 6 percent by 2015. To make that happen, the company is launching six new vehicles in China this year, including two small SUVs called the Kuga and the EcoSport, the Mondeo midsize sedan and the Explorer SUV, which is exported from Chicago. The Lincoln luxury brand will arrive next year.

To meet its goals, the company has undertaken its most ambitious growth since Ford went on a post-war building spree in Michigan 60 years ago.

Ford is spending $5 billion to build five plants - including three assembly plants, an engine plant and a transmission plant - that will more than double its Chinese production capacity to 1.7 million vehicles by 2015.

"They used to be laggard, cautious. But now they're all in," says Michael Dunne, president of the automotive consulting group Dunne and Co. in Hong Kong. "They are saying, 'We have confidence in the China market. We have confidence in our products. We can win here.'"

Ford sold a company record 407,721 vehicles in China in the first six months of this year. But that was only a quarter of the vehicles GM sold. Volkswagen has six brands aimed at every type of buyer in the vast Chinese market, from the cheap Skoda to the ultra-luxury Bentley. Until Lincoln arrives, Ford has just one.

There are other obstacles. Ford cars are expensive. In a market where 70 percent of vehicles sold cost less than $14,500, Ford's cheapest car is the Fiesta, which starts at $13,300. The Explorer starts around $80,000 thanks to a 25 percent import duty and other taxes.

Associated Press Writer Fu Ting in Beijing contributed to this report.

Countdown To The Eisners ? Best Cover Artist - Bleeding Cool ...

By Cameron Hatheway

Finally, a category in which I?ve been covering all year long with my Cammy?s Covers segments. The main point of a comic book cover is to capture your attention while you?re browsing in the store, prompting you to hone in and possibly purchase the issue in question. Amongst the sea of clich? covers featuring superheroes punching each other or showing a tad too much T&A, you?ll find some absolute gems illustrated by some of the most talented individuals in the business. Quite a few exclusively produce comic covers for a living, never having to worry about the interior art duties as well. However, if you want to enter the comics industry to just focus on covers, do realize that it?s a long way to the top if you want to rock & roll cover covers. Today I?ll be focusing on the Best Cover Artist category. If you need a reminder of what?s been nominated, you can find the entire list right here, and see what I chose last time right here.

Keep in mind I cannot vote for who wins (nor can you, probably), as per the rules. However, that?s not keeping me from being vocal regardless!

Who is not eligible to vote?

  • Comics press or reviewers (unless they are nominees)
  • Non-creative publisher staff members (PR, marketing, assistants, etc.)
  • Fans

Before I get back to becoming an altar boy to the Rev. Dave Johnson so I can be eligible for next year, let the games begin!

Best Cover Artist

David Aja, Hawkeye (Marvel)

While he wasn?t on every issue as interior artist, he certainly was as cover artist. Aja helped take Hawkeye into a bold new direction, and the iconic covers he produced help grab people?s attention as they browsed the racks. ?Simple yet effective? is what I always think when looking at a David Aja cover.

Brandon Graham, King City, Multiple Warheads, Elephantmen #43 (Image)

Whether it?s alien menus, crumbling dystopian cities, or an elephant sipping coffee, Brandon Graham enjoys illustrating his covers on a much larger canvas. He?s skilled at cramming in so much detail, that it garners your undivided attention as you skim the racks looking for the next big thing. The Elephantmen cover in particular was awfully mesmerizing to look at.

Sean Phillips, Fatale (Image)

Sean Phillips does a marvelous job setting-up a creepy tone with the Fatale covers. While he?s both cover and interior artist on the series, it?s obvious that he takes a bit more time on the covers, really giving it his all. Phillips leaves no space wasted, and for that I applaud his consistent diligence.

theunwritten44Yuko Shimizu, The Unwritten (Vertigo/DC)

Always exciting and never dull, Yuko Shimizu dominated this year with her The Unwritten covers. Dazzling and unique, the covers she produces always feel like she?s constantly outdoing herself. In my opinion, Yuko Shimizu is who artists should strive to embody when it comes to designing covers; make every single one look like it belongs in a gallery.

J. H. Williams III, Batwoman (DC)

J.H. Williams III is very good at taking a large, boisterous bag of imagery, and making everything fit onto a single cover. There?s so much color, shapes and figures to process, that you have to take your time when just absorbing it all in. Always action packed and intriguing, J.H. Williams III is a true modern day master.

Who I think should win:
Yuko Shimizu, The Unwritten (Vertigo/DC)

While David Aja produced three beautiful Hawkeye covers in 2012, Shimizu was whipping-up perfection all year long. Each one of her covers was a thing of beauty, and even Dr. Jones was overheard saying they belonged in a museum. Shimizu?s consistent attention to details and colors are fantastic, and without a doubt illustrated some of my favorite covers of the past year.

yuko_shimizu_pictureShe was nominated in the same category last year but lost to Francesco Francavilla. I truly believe this time around it?s her year to dominate.

Who I think could win:
David Aja, Hawkeye (Marvel)

Going with the purple, black and white theme for almost every Hawkeye cover, Aja is a master of graphic design and placement. He produces such memorable images, that even though the issues are released once a month, all the covers are without a doubt recognizable as part of the same series.

When an eventual art book featuring his Hawkeye covers comes out, expect them to sell like hotcakes without a span of hours.

Who I think should have been nominated:
Paolo Rivera, Daredevil (Marvel)

The Daredevil covers Rivera illustrated were things of legend. His Daredevil #10 cover in particular should have made him eligible!

Who do you think should win / been nominated?

Waze could lead way to Israeli Internet growth

The record-breaking sale of Israeli navigation company Waze to Google earlier this month told the world what Israel?s tech experts have known for years: The mideast country is now a major player in Internet innovation. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

(AP) ? The billion-dollar sale of navigation company Waze to Google may finally be putting Israel on the map as a major player in consumer Internet innovation.

Israel's high-tech sector has been dominated by firms that made products for other businesses, like computer chips or communications gear. But in recent years Internet and mobile companies have emerged as the majority of Israeli startups, and many have found success in the global market.

The focus might be changing now.

"There's definitely a shift that Waze has done a great deal of emphasizing," said Nir Zohar, the president and chief operating officer of Wix. "I would assume that we will find more foreign investors coming to Israel to invest in Israeli entrepreneurs." Wix, a personal website company, filed last month for a $75 million initial public offering the United States, just as Google was wrapping up its $1.03 billion purchase of Waze.

Foreign investors are beginning to take notice.

Israeli consumer firms myheritage.com, a genealogy site, and Fiverr.com, an online marketplace for creative services, received major backing last year from Accel Partners and Bessemer, two leading American venture firms.

Veterans of the Israeli Internet startup scene say that Israeli companies are known for their creativity and international outlook, so the move into the fast-growing world of smartphone apps and consumer websites has been relatively easy.

"Because we don't have a local market, we go on the international market from day one," said Uri Adoni of Jerusalem Venture Partners, one of the leading tech investment firms in Israel.

Unlike in larger countries, he said, Israel's small size means that its startups naturally target places like the United States instead of the domestic market. With products ready-made for international use, they are attractive to overseas venture capitalists.

Experts say Israeli companies are accustomed to taking unconventional risks in building their products.

"There's always a special Israeli take, and the take is 'Let's go crazy, let's bring something that's completely off the charts,'" said Michal Adam of the IVC Research Center, which tracks statistics on Israeli venture capital.

In the case of Waze, that meant relying on the app's user base in order to help build its maps because it lacked the vast amounts of data and satellite imagery of a company like Google. Thanks to its crowdsourcing feature, Waze's mapping service provides its user community with real-time information on traffic conditions, accidents and speed traps that standard GPS services have struggled to gather. The service has also generated a loyal user base.

The Israeli way, Adam said, is "doing things simple when you need a complicated result because you don't have the money and the resources."

Roughly three-quarters of Israeli startups provide mobile or Internet services, according to IVC. Just five years ago, the number was below 50 percent.

After bottoming out in 2009 during the global financial crisis, American venture capitalists have steadily ramped up investments in Israel. Last year, according to the National Venture Capital Association in Arlington, Va., they pumped almost $85 million of equity into Israeli Internet companies, the highest amount since the global financial crisis five years ago.

Overall, Israel is the world's largest destination for high tech venture capital after Silicon Valley.

Yossi Vardi, a leading figure in the Israeli tech scene, said the Internet boom is also a result of natural growth. "Every major (acquisition) creates a wave of angels and new investors," he said. "Angels" are the individuals who make early investments in high-risk companies.

Vardi helped pave the way for the current crop of Internet firms as an original investor in ICQ, the forerunner to modern instant messaging services. When ICQ was sold to AOL for $400 million in 1998, Vardi took his profits from the deal and invested in more than 100 other tech companies, about half of them consumer oriented like ICQ. Many of those companies, like answers.com and media software maker FoxyTunes, added success stories to the Israeli consumer market.

Vardi expects that the Waze sale will spark a similar round of growth.

Along with attracting new investors, each successful new company creates a new supply of experienced employees who may go on to form startups of their own.

"In three years, there are going to be a lot of people who are employees of these companies who are going to go out into the market," said Micha Kaufman, the CEO of Fiverr.com. Alexa, an Amazon-owned web analytics service, ranks Fiverr among the 200 most visited websites in the world.

Some experts warn of overconfidence. The low costs of launching a consumer-oriented startup, which do not require factories and large machinery used by traditional companies, has made it easy for anyone with an idea to start a business. Those low costs make the companies attractive to investors, who can afford small bets on promising startups.

"I do expect more entrepreneurs to throw their hats in the ring," said Adam Fisher, the head of the Israel office of Bessemer Venture Partners, a U.S. firm. He cautioned that with few barriers to entry, the Internet market could be flooded with companies that have little chance of success.

"We welcome them, but we hope they don't misread the success of Waze," Fisher said. He pointed out that a company that develops an app or program must also figure out how to make it profitable, a problem that traditional tech companies like chip manufacturers don't have.

Still, the success of Waze generates optimism among Israeli Internet companies. "All the press that all these exits are getting ... creates confidence for future buyers," said Yaron Carni, a veteran investor and head of the Tel Aviv Angels Group.

Twitter Reports Very Low UK Profits, Believed To Be Routing Through Ireland

twitter-file-670

Twitter is a huge company and one of the biggest social media presences across the world, and in the United Kingdom. Yet this year they have reported retained profits of just ?92,408 in the UK. Which is about three times the average salary of a single UK citizen.

The Guardian points out that Twitter?s UK profits are staggeringly low and that it seems likely they are channelling profits through Ireland to benefit from lower taxes there. While the company has not officially confirmed this it seems likely given that Google actually does a similar thing.

Twitter is currently not listed on the UK stock market so has no obligation to give further public explanation of their finances. Though HMRC could choose to investigate further if they so wish.

?Since Twitter UK opened in 2011 we have been steadily building our team, focusing on promoting great uses of Twitter by all elements of UK society ? the arts, sport, government and brand partners,? a spokesperson for the company said.

This is yet another example of companies in the UK screwing the tax system. Twitter join the likes of Google, Starbucks, Costa, Amazon and many others that benefit immensely from the large UK market yet pay very little on what they earn, using a variety of covert and shady methods to avoid taxation.

Customise Windows 8's Copy to/Move to ribbon bar folder lists

On my previous Windows 8 install I regularly used File Explorer's Copy to and Move to ribbon bar options to copy/move files from my Download folder to other locations. This folder used to show around 10 regularly accessed folders, including Music, Pictures, Videos, etc., and so it made it very easy to quickly manage my downloads. My Backup and Album Art folders were there for example.

However, on my new Windows 8 install I've noticed that the folder list now no longer shows the folder I've been copying/moving files to be ANY and ALL folders that I've accessed, including just navigating to them and opening them. This means that the regularly used locations. such as my Album Art folder, are not being stored for long as I only have to open a folder and it will added there replacing the oldest one, even if I didn't actually copy or move anything there from the ribbon bar. Music, Pictures, Desktop, Documents and Videos are the only ones that stay fixed. I've tried to find out how to do edit or change this to how it was before but I've had no luck. It is obviously possible because that is how I had it setup before, though I don't remember doing any tweaks or anything like that to enable it.

Does anyone know how to change the behaviour of Copy to and Move to so they ONLY include locations you have actually copied or moved files to please not every folder I've merely opened?

Mohamed ElBaradei to be named Egypt's interim prime minister

After days of violent demonstrations following the overthrow of Egypt's President Morsi, for a time today, one of his chief critics, Mohamed ElBaradei, was named the interim prime minister, in a move that would have given the generals who ousted Morsi new credibility with the West. But then the offer was withdrawn. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ian Johnston and Charlene Gubash, NBC News

Egypt's interim president has backed away from an announcement Saturday that pro-reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei would be appointed as the country's interim prime minister, news agencies reported.

Ahmed el-Musilamani, a?spokesman for President Adly Mansour said consultations were continuing, denying that ElBaradei's appointment was ever certain following the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi, according to The Associated Press.

Mansour, chairman of the supreme constitutional court, who was sworn in as interim president Thursday.

Egypt?s National Salvation Front announced earlier in the day that former United Nations nuclear agency chief ElBaradei was scheduled to take his oath of office at 8 p.m. local time on Saturday.

According to a source familiar with the Obama administration's thinking, the administration would be willing to work with El Baradei if he is named Egypt's interim prime minister. The administration would also encourage ElBaradei to put an end to the violence, the source told NBC News.?

Secretary of State John Kerry also stressed in a statement that the United States wants to see Egypt's civilian transition succeed, and that the United States will do all it can to help encourage that effort.

Meanwhile, supporters of the deposed Morsi again gathered in large numbers Saturday, a day after clashes with security forces and anti-Morsi protesters left 36 dead and more than 1,000 injured.

A Muslim Brotherhood statement said that the movement?s leader Mohamed Badie ? who appeared at a rally on Friday after his arrest was ordered earlier in the week ? was calling for people to ?remain in the public squares of every governorate and every city until power is restored to him [Morsi] as the rightful ruler of Egypt.?

Hitha Prabhakar joins MSNBC's Alex Witt to break down the 3 Big Money Headlines. She mentions that oil analysts are watching the situation in Egypt and they are saying how it will negatively impact gas prices. She discussed the jobs numbers that came out on Friday and explains what hedge fund manager Ron Baron meant when he talked about the Dow reaching 60,000.

?God is great. He can crush every traitor and every treacherous tyrant. The people of Egypt will protect the Revolution, and will continue to demand their rights," Badie said, according to the statement.

On Friday, thousands of Morsi's Islamist supporters marched across a central Cairo bridge in the direction of Tahrir Square, which was also occupied by thousands of protesters whose demonstrations prompted the army to depose Morsi.

The Morsi supporters ended up dispersing after a clash involving a hail of stones, fireworks and sometimes gunfire. There were also clashes in other parts of the country, including Alexandria and the Sinai Peninsula, a hotbed for Islamist militants.

Mohammed Sultan, deputy head of the national ambulance service, told the AP that at least 36 people were killed in Friday's clashes, the highest death toll in one day since the latest outbreak of protests began last Sunday. Another 1,076 were injured.

Amid calls from leaders for both sides to remain peaceful, there are fears the conflict could become increasingly violent.

A new Islamist militant group calling itself Ansar al-Shariah in Egypt announced its formation amid the chaos.

For hours, there was no security in sight as the fighting ensued. Guns, stones and even fireworks were used as weapons but Morsi's supporters were driven back by the anti-Morsi demonstrators, and the military. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

The group said it would gather arms and start training its members, in a statement posted on an online forum for militants in the country's Sinai region on Friday and recorded by the SITE Monitoring organization, Reuters reported.

The group blamed the events on secularists, Egyptian Coptic Christians, state security forces and army commanders, who they said would turn the country into ?a crusader, secular freak.?

It denounced democracy and said it would instead champion Islamic law, or sharia, acquire weapons and train to allow Muslims to "deter the attackers, preserve the religion and empower the sharia of the Lord," SITE reported.

Egypt?s military has been at pains to stress its takeover of power was not a military coup, but an expression of the will of the people as shown by the anti-Morsi protests.

This is key as it would threaten more than $1 billion in annual military aid given by the U.S.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

U.S. law prohibits financial assistance to any country whose elected head of state is deposed in a military coup.

Speaking in Prescott, Arizona, Friday Senator John McCain said the aid should be suspended.

?I say that with great reluctance, but the United States of America I think must learn the lessons of history and that is: We cannot stand by without acting in cases where freely elected governments are unseated by the military arm of those nations,? he said.

McCain also called on the Egyptian military to set a timetable for elections and a new constitution.

?Then we should evaluate whether to continue the aid or not,? he said. ?I am aware that by suspending aid to the Egyptian military, which is the only stable institution in Egypt, we are risking further problems in the Sinai, and in other areas of cooperation with the Egyptian military.?

NBC News' Becky Bratu and Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Health Guru Carly Feagler's Top Ten Foods - The Skinny Confidential

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

Remember Carly?

Welp, the babe is like a total health guru.

She?s constantly teaching me about clean eats. For instance, the other day she bought me this organic sauerkraut by Happy Pantry. It was seriously insane- full of green cabbage, kale, dandelion greens, spirulina, & chlorella? She recommended eating the snack whenever I have a salt craving? & now I?m addicted!

Yummers.

Anyway this sex kitten is getting married ( read about her healthy?bachelorette party here ) this weekend so I wanted to feature her tight bod on the blog again. Check out her ten foods she can?t live without:

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

>> 1.} Kale &?other greens like spinach, arugula, chard, & dandelion greens:

I love all greens but don?t want to bore you, so let?s just talk about kale. Kale is low in calories & high in fiber, helps with detoxification, and keeps the liver healthy. Kale?s also full of iron, lowers cholesterol, & is high in Vitamins A, C, and K. My favorite thing about kale is that it has more calcium per calorie than milk & more protein per ounce than beef! I blend kale with other veggies and fruits daily and it is perfect in a salad or saut?ed with a little olive oil, garlic, and sea salt. For a kale smoothie recipe, click here.

>> 2.} Quinoa:

Quinoa contains almost twice as much fiber as most other grains. Quinoa?s protein-rich & is considered a complete protein because it contains all the essential amino acids. I rarely have a salad these days without adding a little quinoa on top. Try kale, tomatoes, avocado, red onion, quinoa, & maybe a few dried cranberries- easy & delicious! Quinoa tastes good with pretty much everything and get this- you can make it in a rice cooker. Just add water & voila! So cinchy.

>> 3.} Nuts:

Particularly almonds, pistachios, walnuts, & pine nuts. Nuts are high in protein & minerals. In addition, they?re good sources for essential fatty acids that protect your brain, heart, & bones. I love making my own trail mix with shelled pistachios, almonds, dried tart cherries, & dark chocolate chips- all organic, of course. Since nuts are high in calories & fat, make sure to only eat about a handful at a time.

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

>> 4.} Berries:

Especially blueberries, blackberries, & raspberries! ?Wild berries, ( blueberries in particular ), have high levels of antioxidants. One study found that wild blueberries counteract inflammation & insulin sensitivity, two factors that can contribute to arthritis & diabetes. Always buy organic and from local farmers when possible. I eat a little bowl of fresh berries almost daily?so refreshing & yummy!?For a fun berry recipe, click here.

>> 5.} Dark Chocolate:

Who doesn?t need a little chocolate now & then?! Like most of the other foods I have mentioned, dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which help rid the body of free radicals ( free radicals cause aging & cancer ). Dark chocolate?s good for the heart ( can improve blood flow & lower blood pressure ) & good for the brain ( causes the brain to release endorphins, which will make you feel happier )! I love the Endangered Species Chocolate Bars ( which are delicious and give back to help animals ) & also the dark chocolate sea salt almonds from Trader Joe?s. Yum!

>> 6.} Apples:

I love a good apple. Fiji, Honey Crisp, Pink Lady, & Granny Smith are my faves. Apples contain fiber ( four grams per medium apple ). They also are a good source of immune-boosting Vitamin C. Apples satisfy hunger for few calories so they can promote weight loss. Eating apples also help with oral hygiene & heart health. They satisfy my cravings for crunch and sweet at the same time. I eat one daily and crave them. Apples slices are also fun with cheese or almond butter ( click here for a delicious apple snack ). Try this-chop up some apples, celery, & walnuts. Mix together with nonfat vanilla greek yogurt & raisins. Sprinkle cinnamon ( which speeds up the metabolism ) on top. Delish.

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

?>> 7.} Avocados:

I could write a whole article about all the different ways I eat avocados ( << click here for my favorite avo snack ). I personally love to eat them plain or chopped up with some tomatoes, cilantro, & red onion. Either way, avocados are delicious plus nutritious. One avocado provides the body with Vitamins A, C, E, K, & B6, along with tons of potassium & ?healthy fats?, which are good for the heart. One of the biggest health benefits is that by adding avocado to certain foods, you can improve absorption of other nutrients. Avocado contains all the essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein. Unlike meat proteins, avocado is easy for the body to digest. And seriously, who doesn?t love guacamole?!

>> 8.} Coconuts:?

Coconuts are a good source of fats, carbohydrates, & omega-3?s. Coconut oil is one of very few sources of lauric acid, which helps your immune system fight bacterial & viral infections. I use coconut oil often for cooking and baking, and keep another jar in the bathroom for a natural skin & hair moisturizer. I love buying young coconuts from Whole Foods, drinking the juice, & eating the meat inside after a workout. I always save a little of the meat to put on top of my dog Mayzie?s food- she?s obsessed with it!

>> 9.} Beets:

Beets are known as nature?s Viagra! Seriously, they contain high amounts of boron, which is a substance that is related to the production of human sex hormones. If that?s not enough of a reason to eat beets, they?re high in iron, fiber, folic acid, & vitamin B. Beets lower the blood pressure & contain tryptophan, which relaxes the mind. I?ve been obsessed with beets for the past couple years, especially since I discovered you can make them in a crockpot! Easy peasy! Just clean the beets, put one to two cups of water in the crockpot, put as many beets as you can in the crockpot, turn on high for four hours & the skin will come right off. Chop & add to arugula, goat cheese, & a few walnuts or pine nuts. My faves are the golden beets.

>> 10.} Lemons:

Lemons are antibacterial, antiviral, & immune boosting. They aid in digestion, clean the liver, & fight infection. I start my day with a cup of warm water with juice from a half of a small lemon ( click here for more deets ). Then I drink two cups of hot green tea ( I love Yogi Tea?s ?Green Tea Blueberry Slim-Life? ) with the other half of the lemon & some honey ( honey is another incredible antiseptic & antioxidant! ).
