American Cancer Society celebrates 100 years

Guam - A very happy birthday goes out to the American Cancer Society as it celebrates 100 years. the local chapter has big plans for this tremendous milestone. 100 years ago, cancer was not a word many said out loud.

"We've come such a long way in helping to raise awareness about what cancer is but also and more importantly, helping to identify research that's helping to contribute to increase survival rates and making cancer something a little more understood in the community but also helping to make sure patients feel better supported as well," explained American Cancer Society's community manager for health initiatives Marisha Artero. She says it's the research that's helped reach this milestone adding ASC has been a part of every cancer research breakthrough in recent history. ?

"It's 100 years of progress but it's also an effort for us to look ahead at the next 100 years and really commit as an organization and make a commitment to our organization more importantly to finish the fight that we started," she said. That fight started in 1913 with just 15 physicians and businessmen wanting to address a disease that had very little attention. Artero said, "Here at home, the Guam field office has been operating since 1969 not only helping find cures but help people stay well, get well and fight back. Every year approximately Guam residents are diagnosed with cancer in which last year, the Guam office has provided service to cancer patients islandwide."

So what can we expect in the next 100 years? Artero says of course they hope to find a cure for cancer. "And we're really here in this next century to put ourselves out of business and that's what I look forward to when we can say we no longer need the American cancer society to provide these support services and will be a really shining moment for us," she said.

The Guam office will celebrate the ASC's 100th birthday year-round and is currently focusing its efforts to gear up for this Friday's Relay for Life honoring the superheroes of cancer survivors along with community members supporting the cause. The ASC isn't the only one celebrating a birthday - nearly 14 million people in the us who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating a birthday this year as well.?

Indie rockers Vampire Weekend top Billboard album chart

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Indie rock band Vampire Weekend on Wednesday grabbed the top spot on the weekly Billboard 200 album chart, besting new albums from country legend George Strait and pop singer Demi Lovato.

"Modern Vampires of the City" sold 134,000 copies in its first week, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, and became the second album to debut at the top of the weekly Billboard 200 for the New York-based rockers.

It was also the first independently distributed album to debut at No. 1 on the chart since country singer Jason Aldean's "Night Train" in November last year.

Strait's "Love Is Everything," his 27th studio album, sold 120,000 units and entered the chart at No. 2 while Lovato's "Demi" album sold 110,000 units and landed at No. 3.

Last week's top album, "Golden" by country trio Lady Antebellum, fell to No. 5 this week while the soundtrack to the "The Great Gatsby" film dropped from No. 4 from No. 2.

On Billboard's Digital Songs chart, which measures digital single track download sales, rapper-producer duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's "Can't Hold Us" held steady at No. 1 with 231,000 downloads.

Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" featuring rapper T.I. and singer Pharrell Williams came in at No. 2 and Pink's "Just Give Me a Reason" featuring FUN. frontman Nate Ruess rounded out the top 3 on the Digital Songs chart.

Total album sales this year stands at 111.4 million, a 5 percent decline over the same period last year.

Digital song downloads have totaled 531.2 million so far in 2013, off 3 percent in the same period last year.

Apple News 2013: Company Ranks No.1 In Top 10 Most Valuable Brands, Beats Out Google, IBM & McDonalds

BrandZ and Millward Brown Optimor have calculated and published their annual "brand rankings" ---a list that evaluates each company's global value to determine their place on the top ten.

Millward Brown Vice President Oscar Yuan told Yahoo Business Insider that the data is gathered from both publicly available financial information as well as "the second half, which is the unique part, is that we take in the consumer sentiment."

Millward Brown polls more than 200 consumers from 43 distinct countries every year. After analyzing their results, this year's brand ranking has put Apple on top once again.

The ranking places Apple's value at $185 billion, a 1 percent increase from 2012. Brown states that Apple continues to be a strong brand with consumers.

"Despite what the press says and stock market says, Apple in the eyes of the consumers is the gold standard," Yuan said.?

Coming in second is Google, valued at $113.7 billion---a 5 percent increase from last year. Brown noted that Google has managed to convince consumers that the company can offer a lot more than just good searching capability.?

"It will be interesting to see how Google Glass will contribute to the brand value, but now it's too soon to tell," Yuan said.?

In third place was IBM at $112.5 billion, a 3 percent decrease. But Brown stated that IBM is a company that consistently delivers year after year.

Next up was McDonalds, who weighed in at $90.3 billion---a 5 percent loss. Brown reflected on the company's ability to adapt its menu to growing consumer health concerns.

"It has come out with a much healthier menu with apple slices, oatmeal and a Chicken McWrap which has done well," he said.

The Coca-Cola Company is number five at $78.4 billion, a 6 percent increase.

"What's consistently impressive about Coca-Cola is its ability to innovate," Yuan said.

"People think that soda consumption is declining, but Coke is turning the business on its head."

Rounding out the bottom five are AT&T, Microsoft, Marlboro, Visa and China Mobile.

Monster Oklahoma tornado kills at least 51

MOORE, Okla. (AP) ? Spotlights bore down on massive piles of shredded cinder block, insulation and metal as crews worked through the night early Tuesday lifting bricks and parts of collapsed walls where a monstrous tornado barreled through the Oklahoma City suburbs, demolishing an elementary school and reducing homes to piles of splintered wood. At least 51 people were killed, including at least 20 children, and those numbers were expected to climb, officials said.

The storm left scores of blocks in Moore barren and dark. Rescuers walked through neighborhoods where Monday's powerful twister flattened home after home and stripped leaves off of trees to see if they could hear any voices calling out from the rubble.

As Monday turned into Tuesday, the town of Moore, a community of 41,000 people 10 miles south of the city, braced for another harrowing, long day.

"As long as we are here ... we are going to hold out hope that we will find survivors," said Trooper Betsy Randolph, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

More than 120 people were being treated at hospitals, including about 50 children. Amy Elliott, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office, said Tuesday that there could be as many as 40 more fatalities from Monday's tornado.

Families anxiously waited at nearby churches to hear if their loved ones were OK. A man with a megaphone stood Monday evening near St. Andrews United Methodist Church and called out the names of surviving children. Parents waited nearby, hoping to hear their sons' and daughters' names.

While some parents and children hugged each other as they reunited, others were left to wait, fearing the worst as the night dragged on.

Crews continued their desperate search-and-rescue effort throughout the night at Plaza Towers Elementary, where the storm had ripped off the school's roof, knocked down walls and turned the playground into a mass of twisted plastic and metal as students and teachers huddled in hallways and bathrooms.

Children from the school were among the dead, but several students were pulled out alive earlier Monday from under a collapsed wall and other heaps of mangled debris. Rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain of parents and neighborhood volunteers. Parents carried children in their arms to a triage center in the parking lot. Some of the students looked dazed while others appeared terrified.

James Rushing, who lives across the street from the school, heard reports of the approaching twister and ran to the school, where his 5-year-old foster son, Aiden, attends classes. Rushing believed he would be safer there.

"About two minutes after I got there, the school started coming apart," he said.

As dusk fell, heavy equipment rolled up to the school, and emergency workers wearing yellow crawled among the ruins, searching for survivors. Crews used jackhammers and sledgehammers to tear away concrete, and chunks were being thrown to the side as the workers dug.

Douglas Sherman drove two blocks from his home to help.

"Just having those kids trapped in that school, that really turns the table on a lot of things," he said.

Another school, Briarwood Elementary, was also damaged by the tornado, but not as extensively as Plaza Towers.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin deployed 80 National Guard members to assist with rescue operations and activated extra highway patrol officers.

Fallin also spoke Monday with President Barack Obama, who declared a major disaster and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

In video of the storm, the dark funnel cloud could be seen marching slowly across the green landscape. As it churned through the community, the twister scattered shards of wood, awnings and glass all over the streets.

The tornado also destroyed the community hospital and some retail stores. Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis watched it pass through from his jewelry shop.

"All of my employees were in the vault," Lewis said.

Chris Calvert saw the menacing cloud approaching from about a mile away.

"I was close enough to hear it," he said. "It was just a low roar, and you could see the debris, like pieces of shingles and insulation and stuff like that, rotating around it."

Even though his subdivision is a mile from the tornado's path, it was still covered with debris. He found a picture of a small girl on Santa Claus' lap in his yard.

A map provided by the National Weather Service showed that the storm began west of Newcastle and crossed the Canadian River into Oklahoma City's rural far southwestern side about 3 p.m. When it reached Moore, the twister cut a path through the center of town before lifting back into the sky at Lake Stanley Draper.

The National Weather Service issued an initial finding that the tornado was an EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale, the second most-powerful type of twister.

Monday's powerful tornado loosely followed the path of a killer twister that slammed the region in May 1999.

The weather service estimated that Monday's tornado was at least a half-mile wide. The 1999 storm had winds clocked at 300 mph.

Kelsey Angle, a weather service meteorologist in Kansas City, Mo., said it's unusual for two such powerful tornadoes to track roughly the same path.

It was the fourth tornado to hit Moore since 1998. A twister also struck in 2003.

Lewis, who was also mayor during the 1999 storm, said the city was already at work on the recovery.

"We've already started printing the street signs. It took 61 days to clean up after the 1999 tornado. We had a lot of help then. We've got a lot of help now."

Monday's devastation in Oklahoma came almost exactly two years after an enormous twister ripped through the city of Joplin, Mo., killing 158 people and injuring hundreds more.

That May 22, 2011, tornado was the deadliest in the United States since modern tornado record keeping began in 1950, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Before Joplin, the deadliest modern tornado was June 1953 in Flint, Mich., when 116 people died.

IRS officials back on Capitol Hill hot seat over targeting

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Senate panel will try on Tuesday to pry more details out of current and former officials of the Internal Revenue Service about the agency's targeting of conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they sought tax-exempt status.

Lawmakers are also expected to demand answers about why officials did not earlier share with lawmakers evidence that IRS workers in Cincinnati, Ohio, had inappropriately focused on search criteria that included "Tea Party" and "patriots."

A Senate Finance Committee hearing will give members the first public opportunity to question former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman, who headed the tax-collection agency from 2008 to late 2012, during which the targeting occurred.

Senators will likely seize on Shulman's congressional testimony in late March 2012 that no groups were being targeted for extra scrutiny by the tax agency.

It has since emerged that the behavior started in March or April of 2010 and continued for 18 months.

A Treasury Department watchdog has said he informed Shulman about an investigation into the matter in May 2012, but assumed IRS officials would have given Shulman a heads up before that.

Senators are expected to aim another round of tough questions at the outgoing acting head of the IRS, Steven Miller, who refused to give specifics about who was involved in the scandal during a House of Representatives hearing last week.

Miller was forced to resign last week and more senior agency officials could be on the firing line in the broadening scandal as members of both parties rush to condemn the IRS for overstepping its authority.

The hearing on Tuesday is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. EDT.

The rising political storm has undercut President Barack Obama's second-term agenda and put the White House on the defensive as he tries to negotiate a budget deal with Republicans and push a comprehensive immigration reform bill through Congress.

The hearing in the Democratic-controlled Senate Finance Committee will feature a push for more details about who ordered the extra tax scrutiny for conservative groups. It will also focus on whether the White House was slow to divulge the practice once it learned of it.

Those questions gained more urgency on Monday when the White House revealed that two senior aides to Obama knew weeks ago about a draft Treasury Department watchdog report detailing the IRS targeting that occurred for an 18-month period starting in early 2010.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler was notified on April 24 of the report's preliminary findings, and that she told Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and other senior staffers soon afterward.

Obama has said he did not learn of the report's findings until May 10, when IRS official Lois Lerner apologized for the targeting at an American Bar Association conference.

The leaders of the Senate Finance Committee - Democratic Chairman Max Baucus of Montana and senior Republican Orrin Hatch of Utah - sent the IRS a letter on Monday seeking a broad range of documents and asking more than 40 questions covering three years of IRS activity.

"Targeting applicants for tax-exempt status using political labels threatens to undermine the public's trust in the IRS," Baucus and Hatch said in a letter to Miller. "Lack of candor in advising the Senate of the practice is equally troubling."

'MORE IS GOING TO COME OUT'

Among other things, the two senators asked for the names of all employees involved in the targeting effort and for copies of any communication between IRS employees and outside parties, including anyone in the White House or Treasury Department.

They also asked for the names of any IRS employees who became aware of anyone at the White House or Treasury who knew about the practice.

"I have a hunch that a lot more is going to come out, frankly," Baucus said in an interview on Sunday with Bloomberg Television. "I suspect that we will learn more in the next several days, maybe the next couple three weeks which adds more context to all of this."

The Senate Finance Committee is conducting one of three congressional probes into the scandal. The House Ways and Means Committee held the first hearing last week, and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing on Wednesday.

Lerner, head of the IRS tax-exempt organizations office, is scheduled to testify at Wednesday's hearing.

The Justice Department is also looking into the IRS practice, which has drawn angry accusations of a cover-up from Republicans who have accused Obama's administration of using government powers to punish political rivals.

Some Democrats, while also condemning the practice, have noted the IRS was headed by Shulman - an appointee of Republican President George W. Bush - during the period in question. Shulman has, however, donated to Democrats.

Also testifying at Tuesday's hearing with Shulman and Miller will be J. Russell George, the head of the watchdog group that issued a report on the IRS last week. George testified at the House hearing last week and said his office is continuing to investigate the matter.

Sens. Carl Levin (D) of Michigan and John McCain (R) of Arizona will put Apple CEO Tim Cook to a congressional roasting before their Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, alleging that the company shielded as much as $10 billion in profits per year through creative accounting measures which, while legal, violate the spirit of American tax law.

Apple?s tax moves are ?right at the top of the list of creative tax gimmicks,? Senator Levin told reporters Monday. ?I had never seen anything like this, and we don?t know anybody who has seen anything like this.?

Apple isn?t alone in drawing the committee?s ire: Last year, fellow tech titans Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard were the focus of another hearing on tax avoidance strategies. Apple holds some $100 billion in cash overseas.

The inquiry cuts right to the heart of several brewing debates in Washington. First are questions of equity in the tax system, where lawmakers find it hard to explain why a US-based company like Apple can negotiate a special 2 percent tax rate with Ireland for a chunk of its foreign profits, for example.

That question of tax fairness is of particular importance in today?s tight fiscal times, with lawmakers straining for ways to find new revenues in politically palatable ways or reduce spending without cutting into core government functions from military spending to the social safety net.

In the long run, the issue of how the nation should structure corporate taxation is a key piece of America?s global competitiveness, an issue often raised by tax reformers like Sen. Max Baucus (D) of Montana and Rep. Dave Camp (R) of Michigan, the chairs of the tax-writing committees in the Senate and House. They want to close tax deductions and lower tax rates for both individuals and corporations ? and shift most corporate profits earned abroad into a lower tax threshold than the 35 percent rate that hits many private sector bottom lines today.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Then CIA-Director David Petraeus objected to the final talking points the Obama administration used after the deadly assault on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, because he wanted to see more details revealed to the public, according to emails released Wednesday by the White House.

Under pressure in the investigation that continues eight months after the attacks, the White House on Wednesday released 99 pages of emails and a single page of hand-written notes made by Petraeus' deputy, Mike Morell, after a meeting at the White House on Saturday, Sept. 15. On that page, Morell scratched out from the CIA's early drafts of talking points mentions of al-Qaida, the experience of fighters in Libya, Islamic extremists and a warning to the Cairo embassy on the eve of the attacks of calls for a demonstration and break-in by jihadists.

Petraeus apparently was displeased by the removal of so much of the material his analysts initially had proposed for release. The talking points were sent to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to prepare her for an appearance on news shows on Sunday, Sept. 16, and also to members of the House Intelligence Committee.

"No mention of the cable to Cairo, either?" Petraeus wrote after receiving Morell's edited version, developed after an intense back-and-forth among Obama administration officials. "Frankly, I'd just as soon not use this, then."

Petreaus' email comes at the end of extensive back-and-forth between officials at the CIA, White House, State Department and other agencies weighing in on a public explanation for the Sept. 11, 2012, attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans

The emails were partially blacked out, including removal of names of senders and recipients who are career employees at the CIA and elsewhere.

The emails show only minor edits were requested by the White House, and most of the objections came from the State Department. "The White House cleared quickly, but State has major concerns," read an email that a CIA official sent to Petraeus on Friday, Sept. 14.

Critics have highlighted an email by then-State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland that expressed concern that any mention of prior warnings or the involvement of al-Qaida would give congressional Republicans ammunition to attack the administration in the weeks before the presidential election. That email was among those released by the White House, sent by Nuland on Sept. 14 at 7:39 p.m. to officials in the White House, State Department and CIA. She wrote she was concerned they could prejudice the investigation and be "abused by members to beat the State Department for not paying attention to agency warnings so why do we want to feed that either? Concerned."

After Nuland sent several more emails throughout that Friday evening expressing further concerns, Jake Sullivan, then-deputy chief of staff at the State Department, said the issues would be worked out at a meeting at the White House on Saturday morning.

A senior U.S. intelligence official told reporters Wednesday that Morell made the changes to the talking points after that meeting because of his own concerns that they could prejudge an FBI investigation into who was responsible for the attacks.

The official said Morell also didn't think it was fair to disclose the CIA's advance warning without giving the State Department a chance to explain how it responded. The official spoke on a condition of anonymity without authorization to speak about the emails on the record. Petraeus declined to be interviewed Wednesday.

The intelligence official said Morell was aware of Nuland's objections but did not make the changes under pressure from the State Department but because he independently shared the concerns.

That is contradicted in an email sent to Rice on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1:23 p.m. by a member of her staff whose name was blacked out. The email said Morell indicated he would work with Sullivan and Ben Rhodes, the White House deputy national security adviser, to revise the talking points. The intelligence official disputed that assertion and insisted Morell acted alone.

An email from Morell also says he spoke to Petraeus "about State's deep concerns about mentioning the warnings and the other work done on this."

The emails were shared with Congress earlier this year as a condition for allowing the nomination of John Brennan for CIA director to move forward. An interim report last month from the Republicans on five House committees criticized the Obama administration and mentioned the emails, but the issue exploded last Friday when new details emerged.

Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee read some of the emails aloud last Wednesday at a hearing with State Department officials. The next day, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, called on the White House to release the emails.

A Boehner spokesman said Wednesday the emails released by the White House only confirm the interim report.

"They contradict statements made by the White House that it and the State Department only changed one word in the talking points," Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said in a statement. "The seemingly political nature of the State Department's concerns raises questions about the motivations behind these changes and who at the State Department was seeking them."

The White House released the full set of emails sent to Congress under the pressure in hopes of putting an end to the controversy that has dogged the administration for months. White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Wednesday that "these e-mails have been selectively and inaccurately read out to the media."

"To make clear what is and is not in these e-mails, today the White House took the extraordinary step of releasing these e-mails," Schultz said in a statement. "You can now see what the Congress has seen ? collectively these e-mails make clear that the interagency process, including the White House's interactions, were focused on providing the facts as we knew them based on the best information available at the time and protecting an ongoing investigation."

An official with the CIA's office of congressional affairs whose name was blacked out sent the final version to Petraeus on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 12:51 p.m. Petraeus responded at 2:27 saying he'd prefer not to even use them in that form.

But he said the decision was up to the White House's national security staff.

"NSS's call, to be sure; however, this is certainly not what Vice Chairman (Dutch) Ruppersberger was hoping to get for unclas use. Regardless, thanks for the great work."

Ruppersberger is the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

At a Capitol Hill hearing Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder said there has been "very, very substantial progress" in the investigation into who was responsible for the twin nighttime attacks in Benghazi. Earlier this month, the FBI said it was seeking information on three people who were on the grounds of the diplomatic mission when it was attacked. The FBI posted photographs of the three people and said they may be able to provide information to help in the investigation.

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, who sits on the Intelligence Committee, said, "I didn't find anything that looked like a smoking gun in terms of political cooking of the talking points. There is very little input from the White House."

But he added, "There are some things to criticize in here. The State Department looks like it is trying to avoid blame."

Male testosterone levels increase when victorious in competition against rivals, but not friends

May 14, 2013 ? Sporting events can bring a community together, such as when the Louisville Cardinals won the NCAA championship and University of Louisville campus was filled with camaraderie. They also can fuel bitter rivalries, such as the long-standing animosity between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. A new University of Missouri study has found that testosterone levels during group competition are modulated depending on the relationships among the competitors and may be related to the formation of alliances in warfare.

"One interesting thing about humans is that we are the only animal that competes in teams," said Mark Flinn, professor of anthropology at MU. "Our hormonal reactions while competing are part of how we evolved as a cooperative species. What we found in our study is that although male's testosterone levels increase when men are victorious against strangers or rivals, levels of the hormone tend to stay the same when competing against friends."

Flinn and his research team studied males from varying age groups on the island of Dominica while they played dominoes or cricket. Flinn found that when males competed against a group outside of their community, their testosterone levels rose during and after competition if they won, but diminished following a defeat. However, when males competed with their friends, their testosterone levels did not change in response to victory or defeat.

Competing in sport coalitions can raise testosterone levels in males, but males don't have to be competing in order to see a rise in testosterone. Flinn says that when watching a favorite sport team the viewer is a part of a coalition of fans in the community and can also get a rise in testosterone levels while watching games.

"For example, when MU plays the University of Kansas, males will probably have a huge increase of testosterone during the game and afterwards if their team is victorious," Flinn said. "At the same time we can create a coalition of fans while attending the game and bond together during the event."

Flinn suggests that coalitions may have had important effects on the evolution of human social psychology.

"The fascinating thing about humans is that whether we are watching or playing the sport, we have the ability to put interactions among the whole team in our heads," Flinn said. "That just shows how complex our social psychology is. For example, a hockey or basketball player can anticipate how his teammates are going to react when he passes to each one of them and predict the outcome. The ability for humans to be able to do that is pretty astonishing."

Members of Flinn's research team include Davide Ponzi, now a postdoctorate at the University of Chicago, and Michael Muehlenbein, associate professor of anthropology at Indiana University.

Minn. governor to sign bill allowing gay marriage

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? With marriages to be available for Minnesota's gay couples starting Aug. 1, Duluth residents Gary Anderson and Gary Boelhower are getting ready to do something that seemed impossible when they started dating three years ago: plan a wedding.

"The plan is to do it in August, definitely," Boelhower said Monday, shortly after Minnesota's Legislature took its final vote in favor of legalizing gay marriage. Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton has pledged to sign the bill, and is scheduled to do so at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the front steps of the Capitol in St. Paul.

"It means the ability to have our love and commitment recognized publicly," Boelhower said. "To me, that's what it's most about."

Minnesota is set to become the first state in Midwest to legalize gay marriage by legislative vote, and the third nationwide in just 10 days, joining Rhode Island and Delaware. Thousands of gay marriage supporters thronging the Capitol erupted into deafening cheers after the Senate's 37-30 vote; the House passed it last week on a 75-59 vote.

"Members, God made gays," Sen. Ron Latz, a Democrat from a suburb of Minneapolis, said during the Senate's emotional four-hour debate. "And God made gays capable of loving other people. So who are we to quarrel with God's intentions?"

The gay marriage issue shifted quickly in Minnesota, with the Legislature's vote coming a little more than six months after voters defeated an amendment that would have banned gay marriage in the state constitution. The groups that led the campaign against the amendment swiftly turned to pushing for legalizing same-sex marriage, an effort aided when Democrats captured full control of state government in November.

Only one Republican senator, Branden Petersen of suburban Andover, voted for the bill. Three Democrats from rural districts voted against it.

Republican opponents said the bill alters a centuries-old understanding of marriage as a societal building block that benefits children.

"Forcing others to give you your rights will never end well," said Sen. Dan Hall, a Republican and a pastor. "It won't give you the recognition you desire."

Hall said gay marriage supporters have told him he's on the wrong side of history but, he said, "the truth is I'm more concerned about being on the right side of eternity."

But supporters, too, cited religious faith and relationships with gay family members and friends as shaping their vote for the bill. Many spoke of the benefits of their own marriages.

"I could never and I would never deny the kind of recognition and all the other positive things I get out of my marriage with my husband, to anyone else," said Sen. Vicki Jensen, a Democrat from the southern Minnesota city of Owatonna.

With passage looking inevitable Monday, vocal and visual opposition was muted. Don Lee, of Eagan, placed a tombstone on the Capitol lawn with the words "R.I.P. MARRIAGE 2013."

"The legislation being passed today is the end of marriage as we know it in Minnesota," Lee said. "It's a transformation from a forward-looking sacrificial institution to one focused on adult desires."

Supporters and opponents were close to evenly matched during the House debate, but Monday was dominated by gay marriage backers.

They taped blue and orange hearts on the Capitol steps, creating a path into the building for lawmakers with the signature colors of their movement. In the rotunda, demonstrators sang songs including "Over the Rainbow," ''Going to the Chapel" and "The Star-Spangled Banner."

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman ordered the Wabasha Street Bridge near downtown festooned in rainbow-striped gay pride flags, and temporarily renamed it the "Freedom to Marry Bridge." He also proclaimed it "Freedom to Marry Week."

Minnesota's most famous opponent of gay marriage also weighed in. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, an ardent supporter of banning gay marriage when she served in the state Senate, released a statement expressing disappointment in a vote she said "denies religious liberty to people who believe in traditional marriage."

Jessica Flatequal and Maria Bevacqua, a lesbian couple from Mankato who have been together for a decade, were jubilant after the vote, as supporters spilled out of the front of the Capitol.

"We're excited to become equal citizens under the law," said Bevacqua, a professor at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Asked whether they would get married, both women laughed.

"Well, neither of us proposed today," Flatequal said. "But now that's going to be part of the discussion. It's weird, actually."

Brain-imaging study links cannabinoid receptors to post-traumatic stress disorder: First pharmaceutical treatment for PTSD within reach

May 14, 2013 ? In a first-of-its-kind effort to illuminate the biochemical impact of trauma, researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have discovered a connection between the quantity of cannabinoid receptors in the human brain, known as CB1 receptors, and post-traumatic stress disorder, the chronic, disabling condition that can plague trauma victims with flashbacks, nightmares and emotional instability.

Their findings, which appear online today in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, will also be presented this week at the annual meeting of the Society of Biological Psychiatry in San Francisco.

CB1 receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system, a diffuse network of chemicals and signaling pathways in the body that plays a role in memory formation, appetite, pain tolerance and mood. Animal studies have shown that psychoactive chemicals such as cannabis, along with certain neurotransmitters produced naturally in the body, can impair memory and reduce anxiety when they activate CB1 receptors in the brain. Lead author Alexander Neumeister, MD, director of the molecular imaging program in the Departments of Psychiatry and Radiology at NYU School of Medicine, and colleagues are the first to demonstrate through brain imaging that people with PTSD have markedly lower concentrations of at least one of these neurotransmitters -- an endocannabinoid known as anandamide -- than people without PTSD. Their study, which was supported by three grants from the National Institutes of Health, illuminates an important biological fingerprint of PTSD that could help improve the accuracy of PTSD diagnoses, and points the way to medications designed specifically to treat trauma.

"There's not a single pharmacological treatment out there that has been developed specifically for PTSD," says Dr. Neumeister. "That's a problem. There's a consensus among clinicians that existing pharmaceutical treatments such as antidepressant simple do not work. In fact, we know very well that people with PTSD who use marijuana -- a potent cannabinoid -- often experience more relief from their symptoms than they do from antidepressants and other psychiatric medications. Clearly, there's a very urgent need to develop novel evidence-based treatments for PTSD."

The study divided 60 participants into three groups: participants with PTSD; participants with a history of trauma but no PTSD; and participants with no history of trauma or PTSD. Participants in all three groups received a harmless radioactive tracer that illuminates CB1 receptors when exposed to positron emissions tomography (PET scans). Results showed that participants with PTSD, especially women, had more CB1 receptors in brain regions associated with fear and anxiety than volunteers without PTSD. The PTSD group also had lower levels of the neurotransmitter anandamide, an endocannabinoid that binds to CB1. If anandamide levels are too low, Dr. Neumeister explains, the brain compensates by increasing the number of CB1 receptors. "This helps the brain utilize the remaining endocannabinoids," he says.

Much is still unknown about the effects of anandamide in humans but in rats the chemical has been shown to impair memory. "What is PTSD? It's an illness where people cannot forget what they have experienced," Dr. Neumeister says. "Our findings offer a possible biological explanation for this phenomenon."

Current diagnostics for PTSD rely on subjective measures and patient recall, making it difficult to accurately diagnose the condition or discern its symptoms from those of depression and anxiety. Biological markers of PTSD, such as tests for CB1 receptors and anandamide levels, could dramatically improve diagnosis and treatment for trauma victims.

Among the 1.7 million men and women who have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, an estimated 20% have PTSD. But PTSD is not limited to soldiers. Trauma from sexual abuse, domestic violence, car accidents, natural disaster, violent assault or even a life-threatening medical diagnosis can lead to PTSD. The condition affects nearly 8 million Americans annually.

These findings were made possible through the collaborative efforts of researchers at NYU School of Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD and the University of California at Irvine.

The subject of hunting for beginners seems like it should be simple, but it's not. There are things that experienced hunters are still learning when it comes to the hunt and the techniques involved. We all have to start somewhere and there's no shame in that. So, if you're a beginner hunter, read on and hopefully learn a thing or two.

Knowing where to start can be hard. Trying to tell adults who are interested in hunting how to hunt can be hard to someone who has been doing it since he was a child. When I started, all I really had to do was listen to my dad and follow his instructions. So this is a learning process for me too, to put myself where you are as an adult beginner. It's not a bad thing. Getting started hunting is an awesome idea for anyone looking to get into it.

Let me first say that starting out during hunting season is a very bad idea. Just throwing yourself into it can be fine in many things you do in life, but in hunting you really want to set the process going before it's time to get out there and hunt. That way, when you do get out there, you will be educated and pretty familiar with whatever equipment you choose to go with, whether that is rifle or bow. Spend some time beforehand learning how to get good on the gun or bow (or both) and practice every chance you can get.

First Things First

Try and attend a hunter education class. These are usually known as hunter safety courses. This class should help you understand more about the process of hunting and the wildlife out there. It is invaluable as it teaches you about gun safety, which is most important. You will meet other beginner hunters and perhaps form friendships with them (and just maybe gain a hunting buddy in the process). This is a great atmosphere for you to get those first shots in. You can check with your state's local wildlife agency to find a class near you.

Find a Mentor

If you know someone who is a licensed hunter, you could go out with him or her and watch as they go about the process of it. This way you can take it all in without the chance of mishandling equipment or not being ready. The course above is still invaluable, but this is good in addition to the class.

Review Your State's Regulations

Check the state's license requirements to make sure you meet all of them before investing any money into gear and such. Learn when you can hunt and when you can't, find out what kinds of equipment you can use at what time. Different parts of the state may have different or more restrictive regulations.

Before Handling a Gun

Make sure you understand all the rules of basic firearm safety. Even experienced hunters need to read and review these from time to time. Remember that rudimentary safety procedures also apply to bows and other archery equipment. Always be safe with this equipment.

Get Some Practice In

Since you got those first shots in at your safety course, now's the time to go practice at a range. Do not go out and buy your own gun until you know what kind you are most comfortable with and you start doing well at the range. Borrow a gun if you can or rent one from the range. You won't get good unless you practice and then practice some more.

What if I Want to Bow Hunt?

This isn't a slight on anyone, believe me. I started out a newbie too, and I just have to say that from knowing what it's like to use both gun and bow in the hunt that bow hunting is not really for beginners. If you do choose to start this way, practice is even more important as it's a lot more challenging to control bows or crossbows than firearms. It's that extra challenge that draws many hunters to bow hunting, but too many new hunters have headed into the field with too little practice. It takes time to become good in either one, so remember that practice is key.

A Few More Tips for the Beginner

- Learn the area before you hunt. Before hunting season even starts, get familiar with the area you'll be hunting.

- Get you hunting license before heading out into the woods. Not only is it illegal to hunt without one, but that money helps to preserve hunting and wildlife for future beginner hunters.

- Buy the gear you need but don't think you need all the expensive gadgets and expensive guns. Just be sure you have what you need before heading out into the woods.

- Start small with smaller game. This is great for the beginner as there are a lot more opportunities to get in that first successful hunt and it will give you a taste of what hunting is really like before you step into the big leagues. It's better to find out if hunting is not for you after shooting a squirrel or rabbit than by taking down a huge buck.

Above all, learn and practice your woodcraft skills. Learn stealth and navigation in the woods. Learn your weapon. Practice and more practice is what it takes. Be safe and have fun!

MOUNT WASHINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? Authorities in Kentucky have charged a man who officers say had an overnight feast in a closed supermarket outside Louisville.

The manager of a ValuMarket says he found 57 empty whipped cream cans in the garbage when he arrived Monday morning. WAVE-TV (http://bit.ly/15HQ8k7) in Louisville reported 30-year-old Trevor Runyon was charged after he was found in the ceiling of the store.

Surveillance video from the store showed that Runyon cooked and ate six steaks, washed them down with beer and then topped off his meal with shrimp and birthday cake.

Police say Runyon slipped into the store and hid while employees closed it for the night.

Bullitt County Detention Center records show Runyon is from Shepherdsville, Ky. It wasn't clear whether he has an attorney.

Mom: Accused boy, 12, 'could never' hurt sister

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) ? A day before a 12-year-old boy was arrested for the stabbing death of his 8-year-old sister, his mother described him as "protective" of his younger sibling.

Leila Fowler's killing last month shook the quiet community of Valley Springs, southeast of Sacramento, and set off an intense manhunt. Her brother was in the home at the time and told police he saw a man run from the scene.

Days later, the boy appeared with his father and stepmother at a vigil for his sister. On Friday, as speculation in the community built that perhaps the boy was involved, his biological mother told Sacramento television station KOVR her son "could never hurt his sister."

"I've never seen him be mean to her," said Priscilla Rodriquez.

Less than a day later, police delivered the stunning news: The 12-year-old boy had been arrested and will be charged with homicide.

For a community still reeling from the killing, the news was another blow.

"It's bad enough to lose a child. I can't imagine losing a child by one of my own children," Patti Campbell, a longtime area resident and owner of Campbell's Country Kitchen, told The Associated Press.

Campbell, a resident of the area for 33 years and the operator of the Valley Springs restaurant for 15 of them, said she had served Leila and her family in her restaurant.

"It's just shocking. I don't know what else to say," Campbell said.

Other residents expressed similar feelings of disbelief.

"I did not want to believe it. You kind of thought so, but it's not something you want to believe," resident Tammy Ainsworth told Sacramento's KCRA-TV.

Calaveras Unified School District Superintendent Mark Campbell said counselors will be available Monday at all schools.

The district "stands ready to provide whatever level of support and assistance is necessary to the Fowler family" and the community at large, he said Sunday.

Police released no information about what led them to arrest the unidentified 12-year-old for the April 27 attack. Following the crime, investigators did a door-to-door sweep of homes, storage sheds and horse stables scattered across the oak-studded hills foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Divers also searched two nearby reservoirs in search of clues.

Leila's brother told police he found his sister's body and encountered an intruder in the home while their parents were at a Little League game. He described the man as tall with long gray hair. A neighbor told detectives she saw a man flee the home, but she later recanted the story.

Police said there was no sign of a burglary or robbery. As part of the investigation, authorities seized several knives from the Fowler home, where Leila lived with her father, stepmother and siblings.

Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz said authorities spent more than 2,000 hours on the investigation before they arrested the boy at 5:10 p.m. Saturday.
