Don't worry, you're not the only one: Netflix is currently down, admins hard at work

Don't worry, you're not the only one Netflix is currently down, admins hard at work

What to do on this Friday night? If your answer to that age old question was "Netflix," then you likely received a bit of a rude shock this evening upon discovery that the company's video streaming service is currently out-of-whack. If you're wondering why that is, it appears to be tied to some of Amazon's EC2 servers in Virgina losing power due to the bad weather there. As VentureBeat notes, it's a problem which is also affecting sites like Instagram and Pinterest at the moment. For its part, Netflix has acknowledged the issue via its Twitter account, to which it states, "We're aware that some members are experiencing issues streaming movies and TV shows. We're working to resolve the problem." So, there you have it. Now the only question that remains is whether you'll break out one of those red envelopes, fire up Hulu Plus or venture out to the theater to satiate your movie desires.

True Blood Spoiler: Season 5 Supernatural Creature Is?

True Blood spoilers are hard to come by, well at least anything decent. So I am shocked to see that this seasons supernatural creature has been leaked. You will never guess what it is. Honestly, I am not that excited about this news. This season has been fantastic so far and if they don;t do this supernatural creature, just right it is going to make it super cheesy. They have done a great job in bringing in vampires, werewolves, faeries, witches, shifters, werepanthers and maenads, but this is just a bit over the top IMO. If you don’t want to know, go back NOW! SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!!! A recent tweet from Michael McMillian, aka the Rev. Steve Newlin, has everyone in a frenzy, speculating if it is true of if he is just messing with fans. The supernatural creature soon to be joining Sookie and Eric and Bill and the rest of Bon Temp is a freakin’ dragon! There is a dragon. No joke.?@ktsammy: @McMillzz what is the new supernatural character that?s going to be joining #TrueBlood#YouMadeMe? See!! I told you! How can you pull off a dragon and make it non-cheesy?!?!?!? I hope they do though, I am so [...]

Best virtual pet apps for Android

Pet animals are a big part of our lives. Some people treat them as friends, while others treat them as family. Pets can also teach us how to become responsible. Parents give their kids pets so the kids can learn how to become responsible and how to take care of others. Pets can also be great stress relievers.

When my body is full of stress and my mind drained of creative juice, I go and play with my pet hamster to lighten my load and bring a smile to my face. I?m also thinking of buying a new dog or putting a big aquarium right in our living room.

Unfortunately, just like me, time and resources may not allow you to have a new pet. But, with the help of virtual pet apps, you can experience taking care of pets right on your Android devices.

If you can?t have your own pet for whatever reason, check out our list of the best virtual pet apps and take care of your own virtual pet right on your Android device.

Oh no! Furdiburb was left by his alien parents as they were touring Earth. Luckily, the baby egg fell in your backyard. Take care of Furdiburb and grow a cute alien right on your Android device with the Furdiburb ? Beta app.

Basically, the app will make you Furdiburb?s surrogate parent. Opening the app for the first time will require you to hatch Furdiburb from his egg. You can break the egg by dropping it on the ground. You can also let a chicken sit on the egg in order to warm it, strike it with a lighting bolt, or blow a whirlwind at it. Once the egg hatches, that?s where the fun starts.

With Furdiburb set free, you now have a virtual pet right on your Android device. You will need to take care of Furdiburb and keep your pet happy by feeding him the right stuff and keeping the place clean.

You can also travel to the mini world of Furdiburb and accomplish tasks with your pet. You can buy new items, maintain your crops, interact with your friends, and a lot more. You can even take a picture of your pet and share it with your friends on Facebook.

Download the Furdiburb ? Beta app and grow your little alien pet right on your Android device.

Dragons are mythical creatures. They were feared by people in fictional stories and gave power to the great wizard Merlin. If you want to raise these mythical fire-breathing creatures, install the app Drago Pet on your Android device.

Just like in most other virtual pet apps, you start off with a dragon egg. You will need to keep the egg warm by using the heater and keep the egg cool by using a fan. You can also find a bar gauge that will indicate when the egg hatches.

When it hatches, you have yourself a cute little 3D dragon right on your Android device. You will need to take care of it. Feed the dragon with the right stuff and keep its den neat and tidy.

You can also play with your pet dragon and entertain it. You can even discipline your pet using a whip. The app also works like a real tamagotchi. Even when you close the app, your little dragon will buzz you with notifications when it needs your help.?

Become a virtual dragon tamer with Drago Pet on your Android device.

When visiting a shopping mall, I always find the time to visit the pet shop and look at the cute animals; the cute little puppies sleeping in their cages, and the little hamster running on the spinning wheel. I?m also attracted to the colorful fishes, swimming gracefully inside the fish tank. If you?re into fishes and aquatic creatures, you can grow a variety of aquatic creatures right on your Android device with the Aqua Pets app.

The app transforms your Android device into a mini virtual fish tank. You can also get to raise virtual fishes on your device. But, before you get to raise one, you should catch your own fish in the app?s virtual lake.

You will be given a selection of rods and baits to catch your fish. Each rod and bait has its own unique properties. You will have to mix and match them to catch a certain fish. With the right combination, you can even catch a mermaid or a swimming panda and put them in your aquarium.

Once you?ve captured your fish, you can place them inside your virtual aquarium. The app also lets you customize and decorate your own fish tank. You can choose a certain type of fish to display in your aquarium. What?s more is that you can set your aquarium as your phone?s live wallpaper.

Get your own virtual aquarium with the Aqua Pets app.

Before virtual pet apps or even Android devices existed, Tamagotchi key chains were a fad. I also had my own Tamagotchi pet. I took care of it, fed it, cleaned its poop, administered its medicine, and kept my pet happy. And after some time, my pet Tamagotchi evolved into its last form. It never ate, nor did it play with me until it died a natural death.

Disappointed with what had happened, I stopped playing with my Tamagotchi key chain. After some time, I grabbed a needle and pushed the reset button on the back. Voila! Tamagotchi addiction kicks in again.

With the rapid growth of Android devices, you can now relive the Tamagotchi mania by playing the Pet Tamagotchi app. Just like the game I used to play, this app lets you take care of a virtual pet right on your Android device.

You will need to feed your pet, play with it, keep its place clean, and protect your pet from thieves. You can also collect stars by playing the mini-games included in the app.

What?s more is that you can customize your own Tamagotchi pet. You can make your pet a mini princess or a daring cowboy. You can also design your pet?s surroundings. You can transform the place into ancient Egypt or design it into the Wild Wild West.

Take care of your own Tamagotchi pet with Pet Tamagotchi app on your Android device.

Old MacDonald was a good farm animal lover. He had a variety of animals on his farm?chickens, pigs, horses, sheep, ducks, cows, and much more. You can also be like Old MacDonald with the Tiny Farm app. This app lets you take care and manage your own virtual animal farm.

Your task will be to replace Old MacDonald and take care of his farm animals. You will need to take care of horses, sheep, chickens, pigs, and a lot more. Aside from taking care of animals, you should also make your animals happy and breed them to discover new species of animals. You will be surprised to unlock sheep with horns, bluish cows, greenish chickens, and many more unique animals. You can also ask the help of the Ranger to scout for rare animals in the forest.

What?s more is that this app is a social game. You can visit your friend?s farm and help them do their errands. You can also customize and decorate your farm of unique animals.

Nurture your love and show your tender loving care for farm animals with the Tiny Farm app.

If you like taking care of birds, you might like to play Bird Land 2.0 on your Android device. This app transforms your Android device into a virtual birdcage. Your primary task is to take care of your birds. You will need to keep the food box filled with bird food, keep the cage neat and tidy, and grow your family of birds by breeding them.

The app also allows you to customize your birdcage. Within the game, there is a shop where you can buy accessories and decorations for your cage. You can also buy and unlock new birds from the shop. You will be using bird coins (coins with a ?B? symbol on them) for buying items. Some items can only be unlocked by paying red feathers. You can get red feathers by converting your real money into red feathers within the app.

Manage and take care of virtual birds with Bird Land 2.0 on your Android device.

Having a fish tank at home is surely a stress reliever. The sight of cool and soothing water just takes your blues away. The gurgling sound of the bubbles relieve your ears of the noise from the streets. And most of all, you get delighted at the elegant and majestic dance of the fishes that wave their colorful fins and tails. I think I should get myself a fish. Too bad I can?t afford to buy one, nor do I have the time to take care of a fish and maintain the fish tank. But, thanks to the iQuarium ? virtual fish app, I can now enjoy aquatic scenery right on my Android device.

The app lets you interact with fish aquarium on your Android device. The app also allows you to decorate your fish tank. You can unlock new items by acquiring enough fish points. Fish points accumulate over the time and if your fish stays healthy and is fed properly. If you don?t want to wait, you can buy additional fish points and unlock new and cool items.

If you want a clock widget and a virtual pet on your homescreen, you can download the Pesoguin Clock Widget (watch) app and have a cute penguin right live in your Android device. This app is primarily designed to tell the time. But, due to its additional features, you can also use this app as your own virtual pet for your device?s home screen.

Aside from telling the time, the app lets you interact with the cute penguin Pesoguin. You can talk to it, feed it something, and even play rock, paper, and scissors with it. Every time you interact with Pesoguin, you earn points which will be used to unlock new items and new Pesoguin moves. You will be amazed by the cute moving penguin on your homescreen.

Have a yourself a virtual moving penguin right on your homescreen with the Pesoguin Clock Widget app.

Enter a world where animals rule the planet with Papaya Pet Paradise. This app lets you take care of your virtual pet. But, aside from feeding your pet and taking it out for a stroll, you will need to help it do human-like tasks such as going to work, buying some clothes from the shopping mall, and interacting with friends.

Just like the usual virtual pet apps, you will need to keep your pet happy. You will need to feed it with the right stuff and keep its surrounding neat and tidy. You can also do some human-like stuff like dressing your pet and help it find work to earn in-game coins. You can use these coins to buy new furniture, add new clothes, buy food, and many more. Tap Fish is your mini exotic fish tank right on your Android device. As the name suggests, this app lets you grow virtual fish. You will need to take care of your fish and make them happy. Once they are fully grown, you can sell them and gain extra virtual income.

To have a new fish, you will need to buy a fish egg from the app?s fish store. There you will be able to select new fishes to add in your aquarium. You will also need to keep your fish happy by feeding them at the right time and keeping the tank clean. Don?t let your fish starve. You might end up killing your exotic and rare fishes.

The Tap Fish app also allows you to breed new types of fish. All you need to do is to buy two breedable fishes. Let the two fish grow and breed them to discover new and rare fish. You can also sell your adult fish and accumulate more coins. Coins are used to purchase in-game items. Some items can be bought by using Fish Bucks. Army to Deploy Android Smartphones in Oct.

The U.S. Army is preparing to send hundreds of Android smartphones overseas in October, as part of a secure battlefield communication system.

Sixteen years in the making, the Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) will provide more than 1,000 troops with Motorola Atrix phones, according to a report from Wired.

Using Rifleman Radios plugged into the Motorola devices, soldiers will be able to rapidly send voice messages, texts, photos, and data across war zones.

Unfortunately, "it arrives pretty much too late for the wars," Wired pointed out. The technology has been in the works since 1996, when cell phones were the size of bricks and smartphone mechanics were just a glimmer in Apple's eyes.

"WIN-T was designed as a communications system [?] for the U.S. Army that would enable decisive combat actions," GlobalSecurity.org said in a 1999 description of the network, which began its life in the mid-1990s under the name Land Warrior, Wired said. Back then, the Army required soldiers to wear 12-pound computers that included keyboards and monocles attached by cables.

Now, the altered Android phones will load mapping applications with location data about the 3rd and 4th Brigade Combat Teams of the 10th Mountain Division in Afhanistan. Records of insurgents, homemade bombs, or Afghan civilians will appear on the digital maps based on soldier input, according to Wired.

The Army's director for Systems Integration, and an amateur app designer, Col. Dan Hughes, is open to using devices other than the Motorola Atrix, Wired reported. The colonel reportedly envisions a newer phone system being used for the network every year or two.

Over the next two years, the Army wants to bring WIN-T to a total of eight brigades.

The U.S. government has been teasing military-grade smartphone technology for a while. Last summer, it tested apps to aid soldiers in battlefield tasks, months before the Department of Defense approved Dell's Android-based Streak 5 tablet for use on its secure networks.

In February, the U.S. government announced that employees, including some in the military, would receive smartphones later this year that are authorized to send and receive classified documents.

Romance Academy

Romance Academy

There is a reason LaGretto Academy is known as Romance Academy; the frequent love affairs going on. Though this sounds like a boring Highschool roleplay, I guarentee you it's not. A new professer has arrived, and people are beginning to go missing.

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will have their first showdown on the opening night of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The world's top swimmers advanced to Monday's final of the 400-meter individual medley, a loaded race that also includes the silver medalist from last year's world championships, Tyler Clary. Only the top two earn a spot on the team for London.

Lochte, the defending world champion, was the top qualifier in morning preliminaries with a time of 4 minutes, 10.66 seconds. Phelps was next fastest, cruising through his preliminary heat in 4:14.72. Clary was fourth-fastest at 4:15.88.

Phelps is the world-record holder and won the 400 IM at the last two Olympics, but he vowed to drop the grueling event after Beijing. He brought it back over the past year and said he's known "for a while" that he would be in the race at Omaha. The only stumble came beforehand, when Phelps realized he had the wrong cap. He found a plain white model that worked just fine.

"It felt fairly relaxed," said Phelps, a 14-time Olympic gold medalist who plans to retire after these games. "I'm happy."

Lochte was pleased with his effort, though he knows he'll need to go even faster to beat Phelps. He expects his rival to put in a much better time in the evening.

"That was the easiest 4:14 he's ever done, that I've seen in the whole entire world," Lochte said. "It looked really, really smooth for him. Tonight's definitely going to be a dogfight. It's not just going to be me and Michael. It's going to be Tyler Clary, too. It's definitely going to be a fight."

Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, was coy about his plans before the trials but said he's known since a March meet in Indianapolis that Phelps was going to compete in the 400 IM.

"He did one and it's really the best one he's ever done in a season," Bowman said. "He was like, 'Man, it would be a shame not to do this.' We'll know a lot more tonight whether that was a good decision."

Clary expected Phelps to scratch from the event, which would have made it much easier to qualify for a spot on the Olympic team. Now, Clary has to beat either Lochte or Phelps to compete in the 400 IM in London.

"It will definitely be a more interesting race now," Clary said, managing a slight grin. "All I can do is control myself. It doesn't matter to me who's in the heat. I'm going to go out and swim the race that I've got in my mind. I think that'll be good enough."

Lochte is eager to face Phelps as many times as possible in Omaha before they resume their rivalry in London.

"Of course, I want to win," Lochte said. "I hate not winning. I love to win. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm not going to beat myself up over it."

Dana Vollmer, coming back from the disappointment of missing the Olympics four years ago, was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly. She posted the fastest time ever in the United States (56.59), breaking a 12-year-old mark, and has her sights on Sarah Sjoestroem's world record (56.06), which was set in 2009 during the era of high-tech, rubberized suits.

"It's always in the back of my mind," said Vollmer, the defending world champion in the 100 fly. "I definitely want to do a 55."

Vollmer, who made the 2004 Olympics as a 16-year-old, battled injuries and medical problems for much of the past decade, but she's healthy now and thriving with a new diet.

"I feel better than I did at worlds," she said. "That race felt good, but I still feel like I didn't put all I have into it knowing it's just the prelims. To be at that time, it's definitely a good sign for my next swims."

Man once again a Dragon ball roleplay where you can't be a cannon character. Maybe I can come up with someone that looks like Pan but is one of the full blooded saiyans.

Oil, Corruption And a 26-Year Regime: Uganda's Museveni Clings To Power After Wearing Out His Welcome

Kampala -- A year after winning a disputed presidential election, Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for 26 years after wresting power as a guerrilla fighter, is facing his biggest challenge ever.

That challenge is a wave of mass protests that began last April when Ugandans, led by opposition leader and three-time presidential candidate Kizza Bisigye, took to the streets to protest swelling commodity prices, soaring unemployment and allegations that Museveni is a corrupt leader.

These complaints represent a sharp turnaround for Museveni, who was hailed as a reformer when he came to power in 1986 and was supported by the United States and other Western countries. At the time, he was lauded as a man who could oversee political liberalization and economic growth. But while Uganda has had many years of growth under Museveni, recently the economy has steadily worsened. Inflation was a staggering 18.6 percent in May, although it fell from 20 percent in the previous month. By comparison, inflation in the U.S. was just 1.7 percent that month.

And while the economy is still growing at a relatively fast clip, the pace is slowing: in fiscal year 2011, Uganda's GDP grew 6.7 percent. But in the current fiscal year, ending in June, GDP growth is expected to have slowed considerably to about 3.2 percent.

Still, Uganda's economy has a lot going for it. A landlocked country in East Africa, home to 34.5 million people, Uganda is rich in natural resources and mineral deposits. And early in 2010, 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil were discovered here.

Follow us

In years past Museveni would have been given plenty of credit for keeping the country's economy doing as well as it is, despite the downdrafts. But his black marks are adding up so quickly that these days he gets much more blame than accolades.

He has been accused of corruption, particularly over campaign financing and secretive oil contracts; in October, Uganda's parliament suspended all new deals in the oil sector after claims emerged that UK-based Tullow Oil paid multi-million dollar bribes to government ministers in order to influence decisions.

And the Ugandan president has been charged with nepotism. His wife, Janet Museveni, was given a cabinet position as minister. His son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is a lieutenant colonel in the army, known as the Uganda People's Defense Force or UPDF, and commander of the Special Forces Group, which is responsible for the protection of the president.

"The point is that the protests would be completely ineffective if they were not popular. What makes them popular is that people have actual grievances that have made them have made them turn out in large numbers," Bisigye told journalists.

Museveni responded by threatening to eat the opposition "like samosas," a reference to the Indian food popular in a country where Indians are numerous. He's followed through on that promise by unleashing his police forces onto protesters, resulting in often violent confrontations that have left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

Despite this crackdown, the opposition isn't letting up; hardly a day passes here without the dispersing or arresting of protesters in Kampala. Uganda's Martyrs Day celebrations, held on June 3 of every year to commemorate a group of executed Christians, saw scores of opposition youth violently arrested after attempting to distribute anti-government stickers during the religious festival in Namugongo, a suburb of the Ugandan capital.

Those arrests came after an incident in which women demonstrators were arrested after stripping to their bras, a radical act in this conservative country, in protest against the alleged sexual assault by Museveni's police force on a high-profile female opposition politician, Ingrid Turinawe. The head of the Women's League of the Forum for Democratic Change, or FDC, was attacked in April, according to accusers.

Now, police brutality and Museveni's decision to use force to control his opposition are fueling his fall from grace. Ugandans just want to see him gone, a notion supported by an April opinion poll by the firm Research World International; 56 percent said they wanted Museveni to resign.

"Within the National Resistance Movement [Museveni's party] people have outgrown the personality of Museveni," Ugandan pollster Patrick Wakida said. "They think that they can live without him. This is very interesting because now Museveni is less popular than his party."

(AP) ? Dwyane Wade is unsure if he will be able to compete in the London Olympics.

The Miami Heat guard told The Associated Press on Friday that he will soon have his ailing left knee examined, and acknowledges that surgery might be a possibility.

Wade played through pain in this year's playoffs, helping the Heat win the NBA Finals for the second time. Wade appeared in all 23 postseason games for Miami, averaging 22.8 points.

Wade says he isn't sure what the exact problem is with his knee, which was drained during the second round of the playoffs. He says he wants to play in the Olympics again, like he did when the Americans won bronze at Athens in 2004 and the "Redeem Team" took gold at Beijing in 2008.

Turing competition results: What would a machine say?

Rowan Hooper, news editor

A few weeks ago we decided to mark the centenary of the birthday of Alan Turing on 23 June by asking you to speculate on the first words to be spoken by a conscious machine. For your efforts we put up a prize of a copy of Turing's Princeton PhD thesis, "Systems of logic based on ordinals", along with a stylish and functional New Scientist dispatch bag filled with goodies.

There was an encouraging, mainly sci-fi-referencing response from more than 600 of you, but the news team have pored over the entries and we have a winner:

Checkmate

This was Roberto's suggestion, and we liked it for the range and depth of possibilites it implied. Roberto, get in touch at news@newscientist.com or on Twitter, and we'll send you your prize.

Special mention goes to David Andrews for "You are meat. Meat can talk?" and to Bruce Sterling for "That really hurts."

Sate your Turing hunger via our "Instant Expert: Alan Turing's legacy".

'Color blind' policies could make diversity harder to achieve

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Whether it be growing concerns about bias or recognition of the value of diversity, many organizations and institutions have elected to deemphasize race or remove it entirely from their decision-making processes. Yet new evidence from psychological science research suggests that this color-blind approach may not be as effective as people believe it is.

Color blindness offers a seemingly simple way to deal with race: If individuals and institutions do not even notice race, then they cannot act in a biased manner on that basis.

But according to a new article published by Evan Apfelbaum of the MIT Sloan School of Management and colleagues, efforts to ignore race can backfire.

"Shutting our eyes to the complexities of race does not make them disappear," they write in the June issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Apfelbaum and his co-authors, Michael Norton of Harvard Business School and Samuel Sommers of Tufts University, delve into the existing research on the unintended consequences of racial color blindness. For example, in one study, White individuals who avoided mentioning race in conversation were perceived as more biased by Black observers than White individuals who openly talked about race. And another study suggests that people who read arguments promoting color blindness are more likely to display racial bias than people who read arguments promoting multiculturalism.

Because color blindness is difficult to maintain even between two people, it's not surprising that the approach has had mixed results for larger groups. Psychological scientists have found that whether color blindness succeeds at an organization largely depends on how diverse the organization is. Minority applicants perceive diverse organizations that endorse color blindness more favorably than they do predominantly White organizations. Policies that promote color blindness can even lead to racial tension when they are used to support claims of reverse racism by White individuals who believe they are victims of discrimination.

A proposed alternative to colorblindness, according to Apfelbaum and colleagues, is multiculturalism,in which racial differences are openly discussed rather than ignored. Research indicates that when people are encouraged to use a multicultural approach, they are better at understanding the perspectives of other people and better at spotting discrimination when it occurs. The authors acknowledge that multiculturalism isn't perfect either (White individuals can feel alienated by multiculturalism), but they suggest that racial inequities are harder to hide ? and more likely to be corrected ? with a multicultural approach compared to a color-blind one.

Vilma walks from NFL appeals hearing

UPDATE: After the NFL asked the players for an adjournment of the appeals hearing, an angry Jonathan Vilma and his lawyer Peter Ginsberg walked out of the appeals hearing today. "It's really a shame," Ginsberg told USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell.

Vilma isn't hopeful of getting his year-long suspension thrown out or reduced. "Roger Goodell has taken three months to tear down what I built over eight years. It's tough to swallow. I have been linked to a bounty and it simply is not true," Vilma told the Associated Press. "I don't know how I can get a fair process when he is the judge, jury and executioner. You're assuming it will be fair, but it's not."

The NFL wants to reconvene the hearing at 1:45 p.m. ET. The adjournment was proposed when the sides bickered over whether the league had turned over the evidence three days prior to the hearing as the CBA requires. Ginsberg complained the NFL didn't meet the 72-hour deadline since the league didn't send the evidence packet until Friday afternoon and not 10 a.m. The NFL apparently interpreted the deadline as three calendar days, which would have meant anytime on Friday.

The NFL proposed the adjournment to give the players the additional time to review the evidence, but that didn't satisfy Ginsberg.

It's unclear whether the three other players being represented by the NFLPA, Anthony Hargrove, Will Smith and Scott Fujita, will return to meet with the commissioner this afternoon.

UPDATE: The three other suspended players Scott Fujita, Anthony Hargrove and Will Smith arrived at roughly 10 a.m. with NFLPA lawyers Tom DePaso and Richard Smith. The three players hustled past media without comment but issued a statement via email 10 minutes prior to arriving:

We have purportedly been disciplined by the Commissioner for alleged activities that the National Football League has grossly misrepresented to the public.

We are in attendance today not because we recognize the Commissioner's jurisdiction to adjudicate regarding these specious allegations, but because we believe the League would attempt to publicly mischaracterize our refusal to attend. We will not address the substance of the NFL's case because this is not the proper venue for adjudication, and there has been no semblance of due process afforded to us.

As veteran players of 11, 9 and 9 years in this League, we are profoundly disappointed with the NFL's conduct in this matter. We know what the NFL has publicly said we did, and the Commissioner has chosen to try to punish us and disparage our characters based on semantics, not facts. Words are cheap and power is fleeting.

Shame on the National Football League and Commissioner Goodell for being more concerned about 'convicting' us publicly than being honorable and fair to men who have dedicated their professional lives to playing this game with honor.

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, accompanied by his attorney Peter Ginsberg, was the first key participant to arrive at league headquarters in New York for the appeals hearing in the Saints bounty scandal.

A relaxed Vilma strolled through the doors at 9:35 a.m. in preparation for the 10 a.m. meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. When asked how it felt to take on the league, Vilma simply told USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell "What's right is right. We're on two different pages. Hopefully, we'll get to the bottom of it."

Yesterday, independent filmmaker Sean Pamphilon, who taped the now-famous audio of former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams imploring his players to injure certain San Francisco 49ers in their NFL playoff game, cast doubt on the quality of the NFL's investigation, "This whole thing has been a joke," Pamphilon told USA TODAY Sports.

Adele song wakes British girl from coma

Danny Moloshok / Reuters file

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Singer Adele's hit song, "Rolling in the Deep," is credited with helping a 7-year-old British girl wake from the coma she suffered after a brain hemorrhage.

Charlotte Neve suffered the hemorrhage April 11 during a normal night of watching DVDs with her family, and mother Leila?told the U.K. Telegraph that the situation became so grave that?"doctors told me to say goodbye."

But when "Rolling in the Deep," a song mother and daughter often sang, came on the radio, Leila Neve started singing it to her daughter and the little girl started to smile.

"It was the first time she had reacted to anything since the hemorrhage,"?Leila Neve told the newspaper.?"The nurses were astounded and told me to keep singing, and she smiled again. The nurses said it was like I 'unlocked her' and from that day she started getting better and better."

Charlotte Neve is now recovering at home, but still suffers from partial blindness and memory loss, the Telegraph reports. The family has set up a Facebook page for donations.

Also in April, BeeGees founding member Robin Gibb awoke from a coma after his family sang and played music to him. He reportedly awoke while music from his latest composition, the classical "Titanic Requiem," was playing. Gibb died May 20 from liver and kidney failure.

TROY, Ohio (AP) ? Mitt Romney is focusing on his grandchildren on Father's Day, bringing three of them to talk to the reporters traveling on his campaign plane.

The likely Republican presidential nominee on Sunday brought Parker, Nick and Chloe Romney to meet the press corps that sometimes sits in the rear of his charter aircraft. Romney himself rarely answers questions in such settings.

Parker, 6, said he thinks "Papa" ? the nickname his grandchildren use for him ? will beat President Barack Obama in November.

Romney's grandchildren have traveled with the campaign regularly. Obama's young daughters, Sasha and Malia, traveled with him during the 2008 campaign, though he's generally shielded them from coverage since.

Romney was flying from Ohio to Wisconsin to continue his bus tour.
