China has insatiable appetite for iPad mini

China has insatiable appetite for iPad mini

Looks like the iPad mini is proving as popular in Hong Kong and China as it'd been in western markets. Yup, despite the lack of a Retina display, and complaints that it's not as "cheap" as a deeply subsidized Google or Amazon tablet, Apple can't keep them on the shelves. John Paczkowski of AllThingsD cites retail checks by Topeka's Brian White, which show an "insatiable" demand:

Nearly all models of the diminutive iPad sold out in Hong Kong and China last week, with sources at Apple?s three retail stores in Hong Kong and eight in China reporting stock-outs or significantly constrained supply.

Once again, this shows Apple prioritizing lightness and battery life over display technology was the right choice, and that the value proposition isn't a factor unless lowest-possible-price is the primary feature as customer is looking for. It also shows that greater China persists as a major, and likely still growing market for Apple.

Now the question becomes, how much will the iPad mini cannibalize full-sized iPad sales, the way full-sized iPad sales have cannibalized some Mac sales, and how much of that will be offset by this type of growth, and by cannibalization of non-Apple computing devices?

Obama to send Congress gun proposals in January

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Declaring the time for action overdue, President Barack Obama promised on Wednesday to send Congress broad proposals in January for tightening gun laws and curbing violence after last week's schoolhouse massacre in Connecticut.

Even before those proposals are drafted, Obama pressed lawmakers to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons, close loopholes that allow gun buyers to skirt background checks and restrict high-capacity ammunition clips.

"The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing," Obama said in his most detailed comments on guns since Friday's killing of 20 schoolchildren and six adults in Newtown, Conn. "The fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence."

Gun control measures have faced fierce resistance in Congress for years but that may be changing now because of last week's violence. Since then, Obama has signaled for the first time in his presidency that he's willing to spend political capital on the issue and some prominent gun-rights advocates on Capitol Hill ? Democrats and Republicans alike ? have expressed willingness to consider new measures.

Still, given the long history of opposition to tighter gun laws, there is no certainty the legislation Obama backed Wednesday or the proposals he will send to Congress next month will become law.

Obama tasked Vice President Joe Biden, a longtime gun control advocate, with overseeing the administration-wide process to create those proposals. Beyond firearms' restrictions, officials will also look for ways to increase mental health resources and consider steps to keep society from glamorizing guns and violence.

Obama's January deadline underscores the desire among White House officials to respond swiftly to the Newtown shooting. Obama aides worry that as the shock of the shooting fades, so, too, will the prospects that pro-gun lawmakers will work with the White House to tighten restrictions.

"I would hope that our memories aren't so short that what we saw in Newtown isn't lingering with us, that we don't remain passionate about it only a month later," said Obama. He pledged to talk about gun violence in his State of the Union address.

Emphasizing the need to take action, Obama said eight people have been killed by guns across the U.S. since the Newtown shooting. Among them were a 4-year-old girl and three law enforcement officers.

The president has called for a national dialogue on gun violence before, after other mass shootings during his presidency. But his rhetoric has not been backed up with concrete action. And some of the gun measures Obama has signed lessened restrictions on guns, allowing people to carry concealed weapons in national parks and in checked bags on Amtrak trains

The president bristled at suggestions that he had been silent on gun issues during his four years in office. But he acknowledged that the Newtown shooting had been "a wake-up call for all of us."

The shooting appears to have had a similar impact on several longtime gun backers on Capitol Hill. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat and avid hunter, has said "everything should be on the table" as Washington looks to prevent another tragedy, as has 10-term House Republican Jack Kingston of Georgia

There was little response from Republicans Wednesday following Obama's statements. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent who has been sharply critical of the president's lack of action on gun issues, called the effort a step in the right direction.

Obama, seeking to ease the fears of gun owners, reiterated his support for the Second Amendment. And he said no effort to reduce gun violence would be successful without their participation.

"I am also betting that the majority, the vast majority, of responsible law-abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few from buying a weapon of war," he said.

He also challenged the National Rifle Association to do "some self-reflection." The gun lobby is a powerful political force, particularly in Republican primaries, and previously has worked to unseat lawmakers who back gun control measures.

The NRA, in its first statements since the shooting, pledged Tuesday to offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The Biden-led task force will also explore ways to improve mental health resources and address ways to create a culture that doesn't promote violence. The departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security, along with outside groups and lawmakers, will all be part of the process.

Biden's prominent role could be an asset for the White House in getting gun legislation through Congress. The vice president spent decades in the Senate and has been called on by Obama before to use his long-standing relationships with lawmakers to build support for White House measures.

The vice president also brings to the effort a long history of working on gun control issues, having chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and leading the original effort to ban assault weapons. The ban expired in 2004, but Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., says she plans to bring it back for a vote early next year.

Europe's Debt-Relief Calculus by Andres Velasco - Project Syndicate

SANTIAGO ? Europe has long been menaced by the threat of two crises. The first would erupt with a successful speculative attack on a large eurozone country?s bonds, immediately jeopardizing the single currency?s survival. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi?s vow to do ?whatever it takes? to prevent a sovereign default in the eurozone seems to have diminished that danger ? at least for now.

The other looming danger is a growth crisis ? a threat that has become increasingly serious. The ECB?s most recent macroeconomic forecast, which cut expected GDP growth for both 2012 and 2013, makes the threat all too clear: The eurozone will certainly contract this year, and grow by just 0.3%, at best, next year.

Europe persistently undershoots its growth targets because European policymakers persistently underestimate fiscal multipliers, pursuing austerity instead. And slower growth means lower revenues, which imply larger deficits and heavier debt burdens ? at which point, as Wolfgang Munchau of the Financial Times and others have stressed, the entire belt-tightening exercise begins to look self-defeating.

This is all pretty worrisome. But things could get worse. The problem is not just that slow growth is driving up debt levels. It is also increasingly plausible that the debt overhang is itself becoming the cause of slow growth.

Few people want to go down that route, because it leads directly to the question of debt forgiveness. But the issue can no longer be ignored ? and not just in the case of Greece.

The concept of a debt overhang has been around forever, but it became prominent during the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980?s. Like many aspects of that crisis, it is applicable to Europe?s situation today.

A debt overhang exists when a country?s debt is large enough that the benefits of adjustment and growth go entirely to the creditors. As the Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman pointed out a quarter-century ago, a country in this situation will be unwilling to undertake additional painful adjustment, because it gets nothing in return. And, because the proceeds of any new investment will be taxed away to service existing obligations, the debt overhang discourages private investment and growth.

If the disincentive is large enough, then a larger debt burden may cause the country?s repayment capacity to fall. This gives rise to a debt-relief Laffer curve. For low levels of debt, increasing the debt burden increases the flow of payments that creditors get; but this relationship is reversed once the debt volume crosses a certain threshold. Reducing the face value of the debt is good not just for debtor countries on the ?wrong side? of the curve; it is also good for creditors, who stand to get more of their money back.

But, while this neat theoretical construct clarifies the problem, figuring out where a country lies on its debt-relief Laffer curve is no easy matter. Many doctoral dissertations were written on this issue during the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980?s.

In retrospect, two things seem clear. First, Latin American countries did not start growing again until debt had been substantially reduced through a series of initiatives ??the most important being the Brady Plan of 1989, under which Latin American countries enacted reforms in exchange for debt relief. Second, creditors who stayed in ? by swapping old obligations either for new Brady bonds or for local equity ? typically did very well.

Skeptics will reply that Europe is not Latin America, and that the interest rates levied on European governments today are much lower than what Argentina or Mexico had to pay back then. Perhaps. But many European countries are more indebted than their Latin American counterparts were.

France?s public debt is 90% of GDP and rising, and five European countries? debt/GDP ratios are above 100%. Latin American countries had to seek debt reduction when their debt burdens were smaller. And the recent spike in the interest-rate spread on Italian government bonds should remind optimists that, with sovereign debt so high, many things can go wrong at any time.

More and more Europeans are coming around to the view that Greece needs to have its debt cut yet again, and that this time official claims on Greece should be cut as well. But few Europeans today believe that Italy, Spain or Portugal, much less France, will need debt reduction. Give them time. It was not so long ago that few Europeans could imagine a euro crisis.

(AP) ? The U.S. economy added 146,000 jobs in November and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent, the lowest since December 2008. The government said Superstorm Sandy had only a minimal effect on the figures.

The Labor Department's report Friday offered a mixed picture of the economy.

Hiring remained steady during the storm and in the face of looming tax increases. But the government said employers added 49,000 fewer jobs in October and September than it initially estimated.

And the unemployment rate fell to a four-year low in November from 7.9 percent in October mostly because more people stopped looking for work and weren't counted as unemployed.

The report "is something of a mixed bag but, on balance, it's a positive," said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics.

Sandy's effect on the figures was much smaller many analysts had predicted. The government noted that as long as employees worked at least one day during a pay period ? two weeks for most people ? its survey would have counted them as employed.

Still, there were signs that the storm disrupted economic activity. Construction employment dropped 20,000. And weather prevented 369,000 people from getting to work ? the most for any month in nearly two years. These workers were still counted as employed.

Stock futures jumped after the report. Dow Jones industrial average futures were down 20 points in the minutes before the report came out at 8:30 a.m., and just afterward were up 70 points.

As money shifted into stocks, it moved out of safer bonds. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note, which moves opposite the price, rose to 1.63 percent from 1.58 percent just before the report was released.

Since July, the economy has added an average of 158,000 jobs a month. That's a modest pickup from 146,000 average in the first six months of the year.

The job growth suggests that most employers aren't yet delaying hiring because of the "fiscal cliff." That's the combination of sharp tax increases and spending cuts set to take effect next year unless the White House and Congress reach a budget deal before then.

There is "no obvious impact from the looming fiscal cliff yet," Ashworth added, "but it could still have a greater effect on December's figures."

In November, retailers added 53,000 positions. Temporary help companies added 18,000 and education and health care also gained 18,000.

Auto manufacturers added nearly 10,000 jobs.

Still, overall manufacturing jobs fell 7,000. That was pushed down by a loss of 12,000 jobs in food manufacturing that likely reflects the layoff of workers at Hostess.

Sandy forced restaurants, retailers and other businesses to close in late October and early November in 24 states, particularly in the Northeast.

Ashworth noted that hiring by companies was actually better in October than the government first thought. The overall job figures were revised lower that month because governments cut about 35,000 more jobs than first estimated.

The U.S. grew at a solid 2.7 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter. But many economists say growth is slowing to a 1.5 percent rate in the October-December quarter, largely because of the storm and threat of the fiscal cliff. That's not enough growth to lower the unemployment rate.

The storm held back consumer spending and income, which drive economic growth. Consumer spending declined in October and work interruptions caused by Sandy reduced wages and salaries that month by about $18 billion at an annual rate, the government said.

Still, many say economic growth could accelerate next year if the fiscal cliff is avoided. The economy is also expected to get a boost from efforts to rebuild in the Northeast after the storm.

MATR News: Senator Tester demands better rural call reliability

Senator calls on watchdog to stand up for rural phone users, small businesses

Senator Jon Tester is demanding that the government's top communications watchdog address an issue plaguing rural America: the inability to complete a simple phone call.

Despite more Americans using cell phones and high-speed Internet, many people in rural America - especially seniors - still depend on traditional landline phones to run their businesses, stay in touch with family, or make emergency calls. But dropped or delayed calls, poor voice quality, and other problems are increasingly affecting rural phone service.

Tester wants the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which oversees communications nationwide, to quickly improve phone service in rural areas, where a recent study confirmed that call failure rates were "significantly higher" than in non-rural areas.

"During this difficult economic period, small businesses cannot afford to lose business opportunities because of dropped calls and poor service quality," Tester told FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. "To protect rural consumers, we urge the Commission to continue promoting best practices and use all authorized and appropriate enforcement powers."

Tester also wants the agency to crack down on call providers that break the law by illegally failing to complete calls to rural areas. Tester said the practice threatens public safety, telling Genachowski that "it is only a matter of time before this situation leads to tragedy when a rural customer is unable to receive an urgent call."

"Poor rural service prevents my company from providing patients with needed care and remaining competitive," said Justin VanCampen, owner of Remedies Pharmacies. "My pharmacies cannot grow and create jobs as long as poor service keeps them from sending or receiving faxes that hold patients' orders. I appreciate Senator Tester getting involved to help a Montana small business communicate with its customers and support our local economy."

VanCampen also said his phone service limitations stem from big businesses trying to cut costs by selling their phone and fax lines over the internet, which can lessen call quality.

Tester previously fought to improve communications in rural America when he took his fight for rural broadband internet access straight to the President. http://www.tester.senate.gov/?p=press_release&id=1894 Tester told the President that the FCC needed to "rethink" its nationwide broadband plan that could hurt Montana's small businesses by discouraging broadband investment in rural America.

Tester's bipartisan letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is available online HERE. http://www.scribd.com/doc/115611294/ ... 20312-FINAL

ABCA secretary addresses new light towers | Antigua Observer ...

By Neto Baptiste- Observer Media - Thursday, December 6th, 2012.

St. John?s Antigua- Antigua & Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA) Secretary Martin Cave, in seeking to make the organisation?s position clear on the positioning of two light towers at Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG), believes their placement on the actual turf could pose a problem for the hosting of cricket matches.

The administrator, who lends his support to former cricketer Kenneth ?Flipper? Benjamin, who has reprimanded Antigua & Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) for placing the lights on the field, labelling the move as ?selfish,? admitted that he is yet to take a close look at the new lighting towers.

?I have not inspected them but I am concerned for one ? that they are on the green, meaning that they are actually on the field and is a potential hazard for cricket. The way cricket is played it is not like football where you have fielders moving on the entire surface of the green and not just a part of it. Also you have fielders skating to stop balls, sliding, jumping and all of those things. So the positioning of those lights, if I may say conservatively, would certainly not be in the best interest of playing cricket at the ARG,? Cave said.

The cricket association, according to Cave, is slated to meet with the country?s substantive Minister of Sports on the matter of the country?s most historic sporting venue being leased to any single sport association.

?As a consequence of that meeting, the board took a decision to write to the substantive Minister of Sports and that is Dr Jacqui Quinn-Leandro. We did so on 13th November and as a result of that a meeting was scheduled for last week which had to be rescheduled to tomorrow (Thursday) and we will meet at the Ministry of Sports and I believe that Senator Winston Williams is chairing that meeting. So for persons to think that we have done nothing about it would not entirely be true,? he said.

?Anyone who is fair would appreciate that the Antigua Recreation Grounds is owned by the government of Antigua & Barbuda and whereas we have been, perhaps, the more prominent sporting association that has used the ARG and we have a vested interest in the ARG,? the administrator said.

Ask why the cricket association had never attempted to acquire management of the facility rich with cricketing history, Cave said ABCA had always considered the facility one that is owned by all sporting bodies here.

?What we are talking about here is, I suppose, an understanding that the grounds was always to be used by all sports; I believe that was the legacy (of the ARG),? Cave said.

?Actually, one of our members told me he has seen or is researching to find that document that deeded or seeded the grounds to the government for the use of all sports and with that in mind we never thought to hug the Antigua Recreation Grounds for a single sport.

He added: ?Having said that, though, we are somewhat surprised that any particular sporting organisation would have thought to do so; that was not our modus operandi and certainly we are looking into the matter right now.?

An alarm was raised by Benjamin, a former national and West Indies player, over the fact that two of four lighting towers being erected at the facility are being placed on the actual field. The towers, according to Benjamin, encroach the boundary lines and would make it difficult for ARG to host cricket matches.

ABFA General Secretary Gordon ?Banks? Derrick said that care was taken to ensure that the towers are place in an area where they would not negatively impact the use of the field by any sport.

Washington state readies for same-sex marriage as law takes effect

OLYMPIA, Washington (Reuters) - A new law legalizing same-sex matrimony came into effect in Washington state on Thursday and officials geared up for a flood of marriage-license applications from gay and lesbian couples eager to exchange vows.

Washington made history last month as one of three U.S. states where marriage rights were extended to same-sex couples by popular vote, joining Maryland and Maine in passing ballot initiatives on November 6 recognizing gay nuptials.

Washington became the first of those states to put its law into effect - it became law at the stroke of midnight - and same-sex matrimony is set to go on the books in Maine on December 29 and in Maryland on January 1.

Under Washington state law, all would-be brides and grooms must submit their marriage certificates at least three days in advance. So the first wave of same-sex Washington weddings - expected to number in the hundreds - is scheduled for Sunday.

In Olympia, the state capital, the Thurston County Auditor's Office planned to grant marriage licenses to the 15 same-sex couples who entered a lottery to be served first at midnight. The office was to reopen in the morning to serve others.

"It's exciting," said Thurston County Auditor Kim Wyman, a Republican. "This is a moment people will look back at years from now. I think it's important to acknowledge and celebrate it."

Lisa Brodoff and Lynn Grotsky, partners of nearly 32 years, were aiming to be among the first same-sex couples in Thurston County - and perhaps the state - to receive a marriage license.

"We have the greatest feeling of happiness and relief and excitement," said Brodoff, 57, a law professor at Seattle University. "We've had this overwhelming flood of e-mails and Facebook and telephone calls - snail mail even - with people congratulating us."

SAVING THAT DATE

Brodoff said she and Grotsky, 56, could have tied the knot in one of the six states where same-sex marriage was already legal, but they wanted to wait until they could marry in their home state.

While heterosexual couples face difficulties enough picking an ideal time and place for their nuptials, the fraught politics of same-sex marriage in Washington state made it much trickier for gay and lesbian couples to plan ahead.

The Democratic-controlled state legislature passed a bill to legalize gay marriage in February, and Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire swiftly signed it into law.

But opponents collected enough signatures to temporarily block the measure from taking effect and force the issue onto the state ballot in November. Voters passed it by 54 percent to 46 percent.

Olympia residents Tina Roose and Teresa Guajardo said they would wait until December 15 to marry, having reserved the majestic state Capitol rotunda for a pre-Christmas wedding ceremony.

The uncertainty of the ballot initiative process proved a bit of a nail-biter as Roose and Guajardo waited for the election results to see if they could keep their reservation.

"I am able to marry the person that I love," Roose said. She said the couple had invited others, both gay and straight, to tie the knot alongside them at the Capitol.

"I just ran into a colleague today at a grocery," added Roose, a retired librarian. "She was so excited. She asked all the typical questions like, 'What are you going to wear?'"

As for those who voted against same-sex marriage, Roose said she hoped they would be won over "with love."

"You can only change people's attitudes one heart at a time," she said.

Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME ? Classic Era Decks: Horus the ...

Home
> Special > Classic Era Decks: Horus the Black Flame Dragon

There was once a time when Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 was one of the most sought-after cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME. A 3000 ATK Dragon that negates and destroys all Spell Cards was unprecedented. In a time when Duelists relied extensively on incredibly powerful Spell Cards, Horus?s power allowed Duelists to lock up a victory as soon as it hit the field.

The-Horus-Family

Realizing its power, many Duelists built Decks around Horus. The main goal was to upgrade Horus from LV4 to LV8. Fortunately, reaching Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 was a breeze.

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 has 1600 ATK and just needs to destroy a monster to trade itself in for Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 at the End Phase. Destroying a monster with Horus LV4 was easy, especially with help from cards like Book of Moon and Enemy Controller that make it easier to destroy an opponent?s monster in battle. The fact that an opponent couldn?t take control of Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4 with Enemy Controller or Snatch Steal was just a bonus.

Like Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4, Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 also just needs to destroy a monster for it to upgrade to the next Level. But Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 has 2300 ATK and is unaffected by Spell Cards. That makes it even easier to destroy a monster with Horus LV6 than with Horus LV4! Duelists looking for a shortcut used the Level Up! Spell Card to upgrade Horus to its next Level in an instant.

Some Duelists were so impressed by Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 when it was released, that they decided they didn?t even need its final form in their Decks! A monster with 2300 ATK that was immune to Spell Cards and could be Tribute Summoned made the cut in lots of Duelists? Decks, even if those Decks didn?t aim to Summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8.

Most Decks built around Horus used also Jinzo or Royal Decree in them. While Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 negates all Spell Cards, Jinzo and Royal Decree negate all Traps. By getting Horus LV8 on the field with either Jinzo or Decree, a Duelist was able to severely limit his opponent?s options.

If you want to relive the excitement of obliterating your opponent with Horus. Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4, as well as Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 and Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8, are 3 all available in the Mega-Packs from Legendary Collection 3: Yugi?s World!

This Is Yahoo's SVP Of Advertising, And We Know ... - Business Insider

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and her second-in-command, Henrique De Castro, are taking a long look at the world of ad tech startups with an eye toward buying one or two of them.

Their aim is to buy ad tech that will help Yahoo charge higher rates for its inventory by allowing marketers to target specific types of people with their ads.

Helping Mayer and De Castro in this hunt ?is Yahoo's senior vice president of advertising and platforms, Scott Burke.

Thanks to two sources close to Burke, we know the two companies he would most like Mayer and De Castro to buy for Yahoo.

They are: Turn and MediaOcean.

Burke, we're told, strongly lobbied for their acquisition and combination under Yahoo's brand as recently as this past summer. (At the same time, he opposed a proposed deal with another ad tech firm, AppNexus.)

Burke has a lot of influence at Yahoo, as he speaks for the company's ad tech engineers. Mayer listens to engineers. She's one of them.

Turn is what the industry insiders call a "demand-side platform" or DSP. It allows ad-buyers to look for, and buy, ad space on the Internet that will be seen by Web users in specific demographics or with particular Web browsing histories. (Turns out it's profitable to show Nike ads to people who have recently gone to Nike.com.)?

MediaOcean is the product of a recent merger between two companies: Media Bank and Donovan Data Systems. Its business is providing the software that advertising agencies use to buy their magazine, TV, and online ads for clients. It's enterprise software. About $130 billion worth of ad spending courses through the platform (though MediaBank doesn't see any of that money ? yet).

Turn and MediaOcean serve entirely different types of advertising buyers. Turn is mostly a product for marketers who want to reach consumers with an ad for a product that will allow those consumers to buy the product then and there. These are "demand-fulfillment" advertisers. The agencies that use MediaOcean are, for the most part, the kind that make ads that are supposed shape the way consumers think about brands. They are "demand-creation" advertisers.

Burke's grand vision, we're told, is that combining Turn with MediaOcean inside Yahoo will give the company access to the entire world of advertisers. Turn's technology would, in an instant, make Yahoo's own inventory more valuable. Yahoo could perhaps also use it to make other Web sites more valuable, and get a piece of the action. MediaOcean, meanwhile, would be Yahoo's Trojan horse into the world of TV ad buying.

We've heard two big objections to Burke's plan from Yahoo watchers and Yahoo insiders.

  • Advertisers, who are Yahoo's clients, don't want Yahoo to also provide their technology for ad-buying. Instead of a DSP, Yahoo is better off buying a company that helps publishers make more money through their advertising with similar technologies.
  • Yahoo already has tech that can do what Turn does, thanks to recent acquisitions like Interclick ? now known as "Genome from Yahoo."

All that aside, the other big reason Turn and MediaOcean are not likely to be acquired and combined by Yahoo is that doing so would cost several hundred million dollars. Mayer has said that she's not likely to spend that much money on an acquisition.

In late November, a source inside Yahoo told us more likely Yahoo acquisitions are Rubicon and PubMatic. (We've since heard that interest in PubMatic has slipped.)

UN telecoms talks in Dubai hit by apparent hackers

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Organizers of a U.N. conference on global telecommunications say hackers apparently blocked one of its main websites and caused disruptions in the talks that some critics fear could lead to greater controls over the Internet.

The U.N.'s International Telecommunications Union says the website was hit late Wednesday, blocking access to its main page and interfering with a closed-door working group. It says it's still investigating but initial signs point to hackers.

Thursday's statement says Internet traffic was diverted to a backup website for two hours before normal operations resumed.

The 11-day gathering in Dubai is being closely watched for possible new international pacts on Internet commerce and security.

The U.S. is leading efforts to block new Internet regulations, fearing they could open the door to greater monitoring and restrictions.

Toyota Camry may dethrone Ford F-150 in 2013

13 hrs.

The Ford F-Series has been the best-selling truck?in America for three decades and topped the chart among all vehicles for a quarter century.? The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord traditionally haven?t been far behind.

In fact, of the estimated 14.3 million cars, trucks and crossovers?expected to be sold by the time the books are closed on 2012, perhaps two dozen models will make up the vast majority of that volume.? And that list includes a number of usual suspects, such as the F-Series, Camry and Accord.

That said, the U.S. market is in the midst of some of the most dramatic changes it?s experienced in decades.? Fuel economy?is one reason.? Since the middle of the last decade, the small car segment has surged from barely 13 percent of total U.S. sales to more than 20?percent, a trend likely to continue. And new competitors, such as Korea?s Hyundai and Kia, have shaken up the established order ? even as Detroit makers show new signs of resilience in segments where they have long been also-rans, notably with midsize sedans.

Based on traditional rankings, sales for the first 11 months of 2011 ? and recent industry trends ? 24/7 Wall Street is forecasting the likely top-sellers of 2013, a list that includes the 16 models expected to generate sales of at least 200,000 apiece next year.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the prediction that the latest-generation Camry will dethrone the F-Series as the nation?s best-selling vehicle for the first time in decades. The Camry will already be approaching its mid-lifecycle and facing some serious competition from newer players like the updated 2013 Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu. But, in fact, all four of those models are also among the predicted winners.

The Sweet 16 list notably includes no models whose base price is more than $25,000 ? or about $5,000 less than the current typical U.S. transaction price, according to data tracking service TrueCar.com.

Meanwhile, 14 of the 16 now offer inline-four-cylinder options. On several models, high-mileage I-4s are the only powertrains available.? The two exceptions are the Ford F-Series and the Chevrolet Silverado. The Ford pickup has scored a big success with its optional V-6s, including the premium 3.5-liter EcoBoost. Chevy is expected to offer new, higher-mileage powertrain packages when it unveils the updated Silverado next year.

Of the Top 10, the chart anticipates Japanese makers dominating with six different models. Detroit comes in with four offerings, including those two trucks as well as the well-reviewed Ford Fusion sedan and the new Ford Escape crossover. In fact, 24/7 Wall Street anticipates Ford will have three models in the Top 10, more than any other maker ? and four in the Sweet 16, where it is expected to tie with General Motors.

Hyundai, meanwhile, rounds out the 16, landing the last two models ? the Sonata and Elantra ? twice as many as Nissan.

While light trucks have dominated the U.S. sales charts since the mid-1980s, they?ve been losing ground of late, and that?s backed up by the forecast which anticipates there will six midsize sedans among the Sweet 16 and five compact models.

Three compact crossovers?land on the list, but only two classic ?truck-trucks,? the F-Series and the Silverado.

Here?s the complete list of the likely Best-Selling Cars, Trucks and Crossovers for 2013 and the anticipated sales:

1)????? Toyota Camry: ?483,977

2)????? Ford F-150: 455,305

3)????? Honda Accord: 387,779

4)????? Nissan Altima: 358,187

5)????? Honda Civic: 357,621

6)????? Toyota Corolla: 333,933

7)????? Honda CR-V:?327,955

8)????? Ford Fusion: 290,424

9)????? Chevrolet Silverado 1500: 282,627

10)?? Ford Escape: 273,846

11)?? Chevrolet Malibu: 251,403

12)?? Chevrolet Cruze: 247,870

13)?? Chevrolet Equinox: 247,468

14)?? Ford Focus: 243,965

15)?? Hyundai Sonata, 235,218

16)?? Hyundai Elantra: 215,721

The forecast reveals another significant trend in the American market. There are now an estimated 250 models available to U.S. motorists, more than ever before. But that means a smaller and smaller share for every individual product. Only two models are expected to top the 400,000 mark, just five will likely generate sales in the 300,000 range. The rest will land somewhere north of 200,000.

Not that many decades back, a long list of offerings would routinely top 400,000 or more. At one point, Chevrolet sold a million Impalas. But as this product proliferation trend continues, even the best-sellers are likely to continue to see demand decline, analysts anticipate.
