President Barack Obama has a small three-point lead over Republican rival Mitt Romney according to a recent poll made by New York Times/CBS News. The survey of likely voters was made after the political conventions.
The president has 49 percent while Romney got 46 percent. The difference between the two candidates was still within the margin of sampling error of plus/minus three percentage points on each candidate. The survey was done during a hectic week in the campaign. Romney?s camp released new TV ads with regards to the disappointing jobs report. Both candidates also reacted to the violence spreading in Libya, Egypt, and other Arab nations.
President Obama has a 12 percentage points lead among women according to the poll. On the other hand, Romney has an 8 percentage points lead among men. Among all ages, Obama leads over Romney, except for those who are 65 or older, who are likely to vote for Romney.
The survey showed President Obama having a 21 percentage points lead over Romney among voters with household income under $50,000. Romney has the advantage among higher income earners. He has a 16 percentage point lead among voters whose household income is above $100,000.
The poll also showed that 51 percent of voters supported President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. 43 percent supported Romney and Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. This was the first time that New York Times/CBS News used the model known as probable electorate for a survey.
There?s only 53 days left before the general election and two weeks before early-voting in some states. The presidential race is still a tight one according to analysts. The enthusiasm levels about the presidential race are higher, with 43 percent saying they are more enthusiastic to vote. This is an increase of 10 percentage points for July. 19 percent said they were less enthusiastic about the presidential election.
