The UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management seeks a creative and innovative librarian to serve as Education and Reference Librarian and liaison to the School of Medicine. The successful candidate has a passion for teaching and learning and for leveraging emerging technologies to provide user-centered services. Reporting to the Director, Learning Technologies and Education Services this position is part of a team of librarians that provide consulting and instructional services to our diverse and distributed campus community.

This position works closely with faculty and staff in our School of Medicine to design and deliver curricula in information retrieval and management for evidence-based practice and scholarly research. The position serves as a resource to students and faculty, providing consultation services to researchers and learners in diverse areas, including educational scholarship and clinical research. We seek an individual who can thrive in UCSF?s complex and dynamic environment, which requires one to adapt quickly, apply new knowledge to solve problems, and perform as part of a team.

Responsibilities:?

  • Develop and deliver instructional content to support the academic and clinical needs of the UCSF community.
  • Actively engage with faculty and staff in the UCSF School of Medicine and related programs to plan curricula, to integrate library resources into their programs, and to support their education goals.
  • Devise creative ways to deliver library instruction and content, including integration with UCSF?s online learning systems.
  • Provide client-focused reference and consulting services to UCSF faculty, students, and staff.
  • Evaluate resources and tools, providing input for decisions regarding purchase and implementation at UCSF.
  • Work collaboratively on library-, campus- and system-wide teams to develop and implement new services.
  • Disseminate information about tools and services, as well as key trends and initiatives, through personal communications, blogs, news announcements.
  • Participate in scholarly, professional, and service activities that enhance education and library programs.

The Library and Center for Knowledge Management at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) seeks a dynamic, technologically adept, service oriented librarian for the position of Collection Development Librarian. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Scholarly Communication & Collections, the successful candidate will have a strong background in developing and managing a user-centered library collection, have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and have an interest in providing reference and education services.

The incumbent manages the overall growth and development of the collection, manages the collection budget and tracks expenditures throughout the year, and works closely with staff in the Collection Management department to negotiate licenses and evaluate and analyze print and online resource usage. S/he is also responsible for leading collection-based projects, such as the reduction of the print collection. The Library is actively reducing its print holdings. The incumbent will manage the continuing transition to online journals, the reduction of print subscriptions, and an aggressive movement to e-book acquisitions, including a demand driven acquisitions model. The Collection Development Librarian will be involved in many areas of the Library, including providing library instruction and/or reference services and will work closely with librarians in the Education/Reference department.

UCSF participates in many University of California system-wide licenses. The incumbent will represent UCSF on system-wide committees, build close working relationships with other UC librarians, and actively work with other UC libraries to license and manage shared electronic resources. The Collection Development Librarian will evaluate and make recommendations on system-wide collections and resources. Additionally, the incumbent will communicate widely with the UCSF community and library staff on collections issues.

Primary Responsibilities:?

  • Manage the overall growth and development of the collection including an annual journal subscription review; annual identification of items to move to remote storage; periodic reviews of databases; and ongoing evaluation, selection, and cancellation of print and online resources.
  • Actively collaborate with other UC libraries on the shared purchasing and co-licensing of electronic resources.
  • Monitor and track an approximately $2 million collection budget as allocated by the Director, User Services and Collections.
  • Participate in library activities related to open access and scholarly communication issues.
  • Create opportunities to publicize and educate about Library resources and services through collaborative work with faculty, establishing contacts and relationships with individuals and departments.
  • Develop and teach classes (in person and online) to UCSF students, faculty and staff on topics related to information management and information resources.
  • Provide reference and information consulting services, including staffing both physical and virtual service points.
  • Participate in scholarly, professional, and service activities that enhance collection development and education and reference activities.
